Job Summary

The Position


There is an additional 3.35% Management Differential which is added to the posted salary for this class.

Under direction the Supervising Probation Officer plans for assigns and supervises probation staff engaged in professional probation work involving investigation supervision surveillance and rehabilitation of adult and juvenile offenders or plans conducts and supervises a highly specialized probation program in a staff capacity; and performs related work.

Employment Qualifications


Minimum Qualifications

Three years of full-time experience in the class of Deputy Probation Officer or higher within Sacramento County service (See Note 1);

And
Meet the requirements of California Government Code Section 1031 (See Note 2);
And
Completion of the required P.O.S.T. (Peace Officer Standards and Training) for Probation Officers as specified in Section 832 of the Penal Code.

Note 1: Up to one year of the required experience may be substituted by either:
  • Full-time experience performing duties equivalent to the Sacramento County class of Deputy Probation Officer or higher within a county state or federal probation or parole agency; or

  • Successful completion of graduate level (post baccalaureate) courses from an accredited four-year college or university in the behavioral sciences or other fields directly related to the intent of the class on the basis of 15 semester (22.5 quarter) units for each 6 months of service.

Note 2: In accordance with California Government Code Section 1031 each employee shall:
  • Be a citizen of the United States or a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for citizenship. Any permanent resident alien shall be disqualified from holding a position if his or her application for citizenship is denied.

  • Be at least 18 years of age.

Note: If the word experience is referenced in the minimum qualifications it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.

General Qualifications

Compliance with Government Code: In accordance with California Government Code Section 1031 each employee shall be found to be free from any physical emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.

Criminal History and Background Checks: The County may access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors Resolution No. 82-602 Personnel Policies California Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031 and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidates ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of search of local state and national fingerprint files and accessing criminal history information the candidate will be addition a classifiable set of the fingerprints shall be furnished to the Department of Justice and to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.

The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. The background check may include personal and professional reference checks credit history checks Social Security Number verification professional license/registration verification military service information and driving history.

Information obtained in the course of this background check will be considered by the appointing authority in the selection obtaining such information the County will comply with applicable consent and disclosure practices in the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the California Investigative Consumer Reporting Agencies Act.

Arming: Some assignments within the Probation Department require the willingness and capability to be armed. Authorization to carry a weapon while on duty requires a psychological examination confirming fitness to be armed as well as the successful completion of force and weaponry training as required by the department.

Physical Requirements: Incumbents may occasionally perform a wide variety of physical tasks such as running stooping bending climbing stairs and lifting probationers which require strength coordination endurance and agility.

Licenses Registrations and Certifications: A valid Drivers License Class C or higher is required at the time of appointment. Failure to maintain the appropriate California Drivers License may constitute cause for termination from this class in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4 or applicable bargaining agreement. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

Working Conditions: There may be occasional contact with hostile individuals and incumbents may be subject to physical and verbal abuse while restraining/arresting individuals. Incumbents in this class must be willing to work irregular hours holidays and weekends.

Probationary Period

The probationary period for this classification issix (6) months.

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)

All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the final filing date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.

This examination will evaluate the relevance level recency progression and quality of candidates education training and experience. The candidates application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore the candidates responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.

All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
