Job Summary

The Seidman College of Business seeks an Undergraduate Academic Advisor to provide academic career and developmental advising to business students at both the Grand Rapids and Allendale campuses. This is a one-year benefits-eligible position with the possibility of extension contingent upon available funding.

The Seidman College of Business seeks an Undergraduate Academic Advisor to provide academic career and developmental advising to business students at both the Grand Rapids and Allendale campuses. Minimum Starting Salary: $50000; commensurate with experience

Primary Duties:

  • Provide excellent customer service to students faculty staff and external contacts.
  • Provide academic career and developmental advising to business students at both the Grand Rapids and Allendale campuses.
  • Proactively assess monitor and address student academic needs.
  • Connect students with support services to address academic and personal issues.
  • Provide specific and intentional academic advising and support to students including those experiencing academic difficulty reentry and degree completion.
  • Assist with College and University promotional and recruiting events including nights and weekends if needed.
  • Advise students in course sequencing and time to graduation or program completion.
  • Provide support services for the office as necessary.
  • Other duties assigned by the unit administration.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Earned bachelors degree;
  • Relevant experience in academic advising or coaching within a learning environment;
  • Demonstrated understanding of program planning and learning theory;
  • Demonstrated ability to understand the needs and challenges faced by students in a post-secondary learning environment;
  • Strong communication (oral and written) and organization skills;
  • Ability to work both autonomously and as a key member of an academic advising center team; and
  • Demonstrated commitment to customer service.

Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse learner populations;
  • Earned masters degree in an education or related field;
  • Familiarity with computerized student information systems in general (Banner in specific); and
  • Proficiency in Microsoft computer applications.

Working Conditions:

  • Primarily in office M-F 8 am 5 pm;
  • Travel between campuses and partner institutions may be required; and
  • Some work hours may be outside the normal work week.
