The commercial environmental health noise team handle more than one thousand service requests per year and fulfil the statutory licensing role as a responsible authority for public nuisance for approximately 300 applications per year. They are also responsible for dealing with Public Health Act cases of filthy and verminous premises and PDPA work around pest infestations. As well as noise the role will cover other forms of statutory nuisance from commercial premises including light pollution.
About the Role
As the Public Protection Officer (Commercial) you will be at the forefront of addressing and resolving commercial noise and nuisance complaints across the borough helping to create a safer and more peaceful environment for residents. Your responsibilities will include undertaking investigations in relation to noise statutory nuisance in accordance with the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Councils relevant policies and procedures; and reviewing licensing applications and Temporary Event Notices and providing comments in respect of noise. There will also be the opportunity to work on noise control for concerts and outdoor events as Newham has a busy events calendar which includes music festivals and Stadium music concerts.
You must have a proven ability to manage challenging situations calmly and impartially demonstrating excellent listening negotiation and communication skills. Your ability to engage effectively with residents council members and enforcement partners allows you to build strong relationships and support joint initiatives. We would also welcome applicants such as qualified students in Environmental Health or Acoustics. Organised and self-motivated you can balance multiple priorities and work efficiently both independently and as part of a team. Known for your thorough documentation and attention to detail youre committed to achieving positive outcomes that enhance the quality of life for the community.
The work will primarily be 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday but there will also be an element of pre-planned evening work. There may also be a need to undertake visits over the weekend though that will not be a regular occurrence. Flexible working is promoted however living within a commutable distance is essential.
