Mitchell School District is seeking a reliable Student Transportation Driver for a daily route to Sioux Falls. This position transports students to their schools each morning and returns them home in the afternoon.

Responsibilities include:

  • Safely operating a district vehicle on a designated Sioux Falls route
  • Assisting students in and out of the vehicle
  • Ensuring timely and safe pickup and drop-off
  • Maintaining a positive student-centered environment
  • Completing basic vehicle inspections and reporting concerns

Qualifications:

  • Valid drivers license (CDL not required)
  • Clean driving record; ability to pass required background checks
  • Ability to assist students with mobility needs
  • Dependable professional and student-focused

Schedule: Split shift aligned with school start/end times

Position Overview

The Student Transportation Driver is responsible for safely transporting students from their homes to their assigned schools in Sioux Falls each morning and returning them home in the afternoon. This role requires a dependable safety-minded individual who enjoys working with students and providing supportive assistance during boarding transport and exiting the vehicle.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely operate a district-approved vehicle on a designated route to and from Sioux Falls each school day.
  • Pick up students at assigned locations and ensure timely arrival to their schools.
  • Transport students back to their designated drop-off locations at the end of the school day.
  • Assist students entering and exiting the vehicle including those with mobility needs.
  • Maintain a positive student-centered environment during transport.
  • Follow all district transportation policies traffic laws and safety regulations.
  • Conduct daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections; report any concerns or maintenance needs.
  • Ensure student seating safety restraints and securement systems (if applicable) are used correctly.
  • Keep accurate ridership logs and communicate any schedule changes or student concerns to transportation staff or administrators.
  • Respond calmly and effectively to unexpected situations or emergencies.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of the vehicle.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid drivers license
  • Clean driving record and ability to meet district insurance and background check requirements.
  • Ability to assist students safely including lifting or supporting when needed.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills especially with students families and school staff.
  • Dependability punctuality and professionalism.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience working with school-aged children.
  • Knowledge of Sioux Falls traffic routes and weather-related driving conditions.
  • First Aid/CPR certification (or willingness to obtain).

Work Schedule

  • Split-shift schedule aligned with school start and end times.
  • Additional hours may be available for field trips extracurricular transport or other district needs.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
  • Ability to assist students with mobility supports when necessary.
  • Ability to conduct vehicle inspections including bending stepping and moderate lifting.
