TheHonolulu Ocean Safety Departmentis searching for vigilant and proactive individuals to become a vital part of their team as a Water Safety Officer!


What You Will Do:
  • Respond to ocean emergencies by performing rescues and providing first aid and emergency life support including CPR.
  • Staff lifeguarding towers or patrol assigned beach areas to monitor ocean and beach conditions.
  • Learn and enforce City ordinances rules and regulations related to beach and shoreline use.
  • Maintain and check lifesaving and communication equipment to ensure readiness.
  • Prepare reports and logs related to rescues incidents and daily beach activity.
  • Performing other related duties as required.

Special Working Conditions:

  • Irregular work schedules rotating shifts weekends and holidays.
  • Exposure to hazardous conditions such as strong surf adverse weather and emergency situations.
  • Physical demanding work requiring strong ability and endurance.

WATER SAFETY OFFICER I (SR-15) APPLICATION EVALUATION PROCESS:

1)Applications must be submitted online by WednesdayJanuary 7 2026 11:59 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (HST) to be accepted.

2) Performance Test Date:Thursday January 29 2026.

Approximately 7 days prior to the Performance Test candidates will be notified by e-mail of the specific time and place for the Performance Test. This Performance Test will be administered only on Oahu.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

At time of application you must be a citizen national or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non-citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
Equivalent to graduation from high school.
Responsible work experience which demonstrated the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.

CERTIFICATIONREQUIREMENTS:
The following certifications are required at the time of application:

  1. A current validAmerican Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate or a United States Lifesaving Association Ocean Lifeguard Certificate or equivalent.
  2. A current valid American Red Cross Standard First Aid Certificate or an Emergency Medical Responder Certificate that meets United States Department of Transportation guidelines.
  3. A current valid American Heart Association or American Red Cross Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate.
All required certifications must be maintained on a current basis during the course of employment in the position.

LICENSE REQUIREMENT:
Valid appropriate drivers license (automobile/Type 3) prior to appointment.




Examination Process

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE EVALUATION:
In addition to meeting the above minimum qualifications your application will be further evaluated. Your score will be based on the quality and quantity of your education training experience and/or other related job requirements and competencies applicable to the position. Failure to provide sufficient information may result in your application being rejected or your receiving a lower score.

QUALIFYING PERFORMANCE TEST:
As part of the selection process the Honolulu Ocean Safety Department will be conducting a Performance Test. The Performance Test will consist of running 1000 yards and swimming 1000 yards. The test will determine if a candidate has the stamina and ability required to carry out the duties of a Water Safety Officer and will be expected to perform on the job. Maximum time allowed: 25 minutes

The Performance Test will be administered on a pass/fail basis. Candidates must pass the performance test in order to be considered for the position.
