The Opportunity
WSDOT is seeking a non-permanent Maintenance Mechanic 3 to support the State Materials Laboratory a multi-building 60000 square foot complex housing five independent testing laboratories and more than 3000 pieces of specialized equipment. This position will be responsible for planning coordinating and performing advanced journey-level maintenance repair and construction activities to ensure the safe reliable and continuous operation of laboratory facilities and this role you will maintain building systems and infrastructure procure and manage materials and supplies and provide technical oversight and direction to maintenance contractors. Our top candidate will demonstrate advanced mechanical and facilities maintenance expertise strong problem-solving skills knowledge of building systems and equipment and the capacity to communicate effectively and work independently in a highly technical environment.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this rolethe Maintenance Mechanic 3 will:
- Perform journey-level construction and repair tasks across multiple skilled trades (carpentry plumbing mechanical electrical HVAC welding and general building maintenance).
- Diagnose system and structural issues evaluate repair methods and implement solutions using hand tools power tools and specialized equipment.
- Maintain and repair mechanical systems such as boilers pumps motors ventilation systems and controls.
- Conduct preventive maintenance inspections identify deficiencies or hazards and take corrective action to avoid facility downtime.
- Respond to on-call maintenance emergencies as required to support mission-critical systems and equipment and respond to outages and other emergency events.
- Construct modify and repair building systems laboratory spaces laboratory equipment workstations structural components and facility equipment to ensure safety and operational reliability.
- Interpret building plans technical schematics and specifications to plan and execute maintenance and construction projects.
- Maintain service records work logs equipment histories and material usage in maintenance management systems.
- Serve as acting lead or point of contact when the supervisor is absent ensuring continuity of maintenance operations.
Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity the following are required:
Multi-Trade Maintenance & Technical Proficiency
- Ability to perform journey-level work across multiple skilled trades including carpentry plumbing mechanical repair electrical HVAC welding and general construction.
- Skill in fabricating assembling installing modifying inspecting and repairing building systems components and mechanical equipment using approved methods and materials.
Preventive Maintenance Troubleshooting & Problem Resolution
- Skill in diagnosing building system and equipment issues identifying root causes and determining appropriate corrective actions including repair or replacement to ensure safe and reliable operations.
- Skill in performing preventive maintenance inspections and scheduled servicing of building systems and equipment to minimize downtime and extend asset life.
Tools Equipment & Systems Operation
- Ability to safely operate maintain and utilize a wide range of hand tools power tools shop equipment and diagnostic instruments in support of maintenance and repair activities.
- Ability to interpret and apply building codes safety regulations equipment specifications technical manuals and manufacturer requirements to maintenance and construction work.
Safety & Hazard Awareness
- Ability to recognize hazards and apply safe work practices in environments involving electrical systems mechanical equipment chemicals heights confined spaces and laboratory conditions.
- Ability to properly use PPE and comply with agency safety programs OSHA/WISHA requirements and industry best practices.
Operational Judgment & Independence
- Ability to make sound operational decisions in the absence of a supervisor prioritize work and maintain continuity of operations in a complex facility environment.
Materials Resources & Work Planning
- Ability to track material usage maintain organized storage areas and plan resources and supplies to support ongoing and upcoming maintenance work.
Communication & Customer Service
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with staff supervisors contractors and laboratory personnel and provide customer-focused service while maintaining effective working relationships across diverse teams.
Systems Documentation & Maintenance
- Skill in documenting work performed completing maintenance logs and accurately using maintenance management or tracking systems.

In addition to the competencies above the following are also required:
- A valid drivers license and the ability to operate state-owned vehicles.
- Ability to maneuver and transport various materials and/or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Ability to occasionally respond to after-hours or emergency facility issues.
- Ability to obtain and maintain certifications required for assigned duties (e.g. forklift/aerial lift LOTO confined space entry respirator fit certification or specialized equipment training).
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
- State Facilities & Policy Knowledge:Familiarity with Washington State facilities management practices and the application of state policies and procedures.
- Laboratory Maintenance Proficiency:Experience performing maintenance and repair work in a laboratory environment including support of specialized or technical equipment.
