Position Description Summary: APT Research is hiring a Mid-level SMAE Safety Engineer to support Launch Services Program (LSP) on the KSC Safety and Mission Assurance Support Services (SMASS IV) contract at Kennedy Space Center FL. This person will provide quality engineering expertise for NASA Safety Mission Assurance LSP division. Responsibilities: Specific tasks include but are not limited to: - Assure all Quality & Safety requirements are met to certify & complete successful mission campaigns such as: Mission Success Hardware Acceptance Flight Readiness Safety & Mission Assurance and Launch Vehicle Readiness reviews
- Serve as Safety or Quality engineer for processing operations reviewing Work Authorizing Documents and contractor safety processes and procedures for compliance with NASA and industry standards
- Assist the SMA Element Integration Engineers with the resolution of identified Safety issues and provide Safety Engineering and Occupational safety technical guidance
- Support mishap and close call investigations for events that occur within LSP facilities or by LSP contractors
- Assist the LSP Mishap process with processing and closure of NMIS entries
- Review Contractor-developed Mishap and Close Call Reports to ensure root cause analysis and associated corrective action plans are adequately addressed
- Develop and lead informative presentations on high visibility safety topics that require SMA leadership and LSP Program Chief Safety Officer (CSO) review and concurrence. May also provide formal briefings to Program stakeholders.
- Review fault trees to identify failure modes and assist in troubleshooting
Required Experience/Education: - Education: Bachelor of Science (Engineering or Technical degree preferred)
- Experience: minimum 7 years of experience (5 yrs. specific engineering experience with aerospace flight hardware or ground systems highly desired)
- Expendable Space Launch Vehicle system and subcomponent experience highly desired in one or more of the following disciplines: Mechanical systems; structures; propulsion
Security Clearance Requirement: - Position subject to pre-employment background investigation
- Position subject to a pre-employment drug test
- Must be able to qualify for an unescorted badge (US Citizen required)
Preferred Experience/ skills: - Experience preparing and presenting briefing safety issues and technical assessments to NASA management
- Exceptional verbal and written communications skills required for complex technical issues
- System Safety background with experience in operations safety surveillance and integrating flight hardware
- Experience performing SMA Hazard Analyses creating Fault Trees and assessing FMEAs
- Experience performing SMA mishaps and close call investigations
- Experience leading independent technical assessments and providing briefings to senior level management
- Ability to read/interpret drawings requirements and specifications
- Experience building relationships inside and outside organizational boundaries
- Strong written and oral communication skills including data visualization presentation and explanation of results
Essential Job Functions: Work Environment: - Office environment; Flight hardware processing and Ground support Testing Facilities
- Flexible schedule with hybrid onsite and remote schedule. Shift and/or weekend work are occasionally required to support launch integration activities.
- Requires ability to provide clear concise accurate and timely communication both verbally and written
- Ability to interact professionally with coworkers management and customers
Travel Requirements: - Requires ability to travel domestically (within the U.S.) <10%
Physical Requirements: - Requires sitting for extended periods of time at a workstation / desk
- Ability to climb stairs
- Ability to lift >15 lbs.
