Occupational Health & Safety Assistant (12-month FTC)

Fixed Term Contract 12 Months

Grade B

Consultation grade - subject to formal evaluation under the Pay Equity Review

Working 36.5 hours per week

As an Occupational Health and Safety Assistant youll be part of a high-performing team delivering a professional customer-focused and evidence-based service that supports the health safety and wellbeing of colleagues across Birmingham City Council and our traded partners.

Youll be the first point of contact for queries help coordinate clinics and screenings and ensure our records and processes meet legal and accreditation standards.

  • Act as the first point of contact for Occupational Health Safety and Wellbeing queries providing general advice and support and escalating complex issues where necessary
  • Deliver professional customer-focused guidance while maintaining confidentiality and compliance
  • Triage enquiries received via phone email and in person ensuring timely and accurate responses
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records in line with legislation such as Data Protection Act and Access to Medical Records Act
  • Support the administration of services including Taxi Medicals and DBS checks for Private Hire and Hackney Carriage drivers
  • Assist in arranging proactive health and wellbeing interventions such as clinics training sessions health screenings and publications
  • Help develop and improve IT systems to enhance service delivery.

Essential skills

  • Excellent IT literacy (MS Office)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage at all levels while maintaining confidentiality and trust
  • Proven ability to manage active caseloads and multiple sometimes conflicting demands - escalating appropriately
  • Organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work on own initiative within existing policies procedures and legislation and to escalate when necessary
