Job Summary

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Delivers safe patient care as directed by the Registered Nurse and according to facility policy and procedure.
  • Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures and prepares for scheduled future cases by obtaining
  • supplies and equipment and placing them on case cart.
  • Scrubs gowns and gloves before surgical procedure per ASC policy and gowns and gloves surgeon and assistants for
  • procedures.
  • Sets up sterile table with instruments supplies equipment and medications/solutions needed for procedures and open
  • sterile supplies.
  • Helps in draping sterile field.
  • Passes instruments etc. to the surgeon during procedures and anticipates what will be needed.
  • Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures.
  • Prepares sterile dressings.
  • Assists with housekeeping tasks as necessary to provide a safe environment for patients
  • teammates physicians guests.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization.
  • Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of the room.
  • Assists in prepping the room for the next patient.
  • Properly handles and cares for specimens.
  • Performs appropriate counts with the circulator before the operation and before the incision is closed.
  • Participates in procedural checks time out and surgical site identification according to hospital policy and procedure and
    must demonstrate current competencies for the job position.
  • Assumes other related responsibilities as required and assigned.

EDUCATION

  • High school diploma or working knowledge preferred Bachelors degree in health science highly preferred.

EXPERIENCE

  • A minimum of 5-7 years experience in Sterile Processing and 3-5 years of supervisory experience.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in perioperative services is preferred.
  • Experience with orthopedics and spine instrumentation preferred and progressive growth as an SPD leader.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Current national certification as a Sterile Processing Technician Certified Registered Central Service Technician or Surgical
    Instrument Processor.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE

  • Must be knowledgeable of guidelines and techniques for cleaning and sterilizing equipment as well as aseptic technique.
  • Strong knowledge of Joint Commission and regulatory compliance in SPD standards
  • Basic LEAN/Six Sigma and process improvement theory applying CQI and PI to SPD systems
  • Basic knowledge of shared governance self-governed work teams
  • Strong knowledge in vendor relations SPD supply chain and inventory management Knowledge of basic Sterile Processing and Standard Precautions.

SKILLS

  • Must demonstrate current competencies for job position.
  • Servant leadership skills and skill in building discretionary effort amongst team members.
  • Strong follow-up and customer service skills with administration peers and providers
  • Strong skill in basic operations management: budgeting staffing supplies scheduling quality assurance management controls metrics and service delivery.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate professionally both verbally and in writing and the skill to listen.
  • Must maintain clinical and skills competencies per position requirements participating in growth through in-service and continuing education.
  • Skills required to provide excellent customer service not only to our patients but physicians visitors and other health care teammates promoting a positive work environment.

  • Normal and emergent clinical environment.
  • Patient care environment with potential exposure to unpleasant odors blood and body fluids infectious disease and to chemical or electrical hazards.
  • Can occasionally be a high-stress work area requiring ability to make quick decisions while being organized and prioritizing appropriately.
