The Team
The Ministry of Attorney General as represented by the Attorney General is the legal advisor to the government of British Columbia and is charged with ensuring that the administration of public affairs is carried out in accordance with the law. Legal Services Branch (LSB) supports the Attorney General in fulfilling this mandate by serving as legal advisor to government in civil law matters. LSB provides legal advice to government and ensures that legal risks associated with government operations are reduced. LSB assists all ministries of the government Cabinet and certain public bodies.

The Role
The Justice Health and Revenue Group is seeking to fill one full-time temporary assignment for a Legal Counsel Level 2 to join the Directors Counsel Team (DCT) and provide legal services to the Director and delegates appointed under the Child Family and Community Service Act (CFCSA) in the area of child protection litigation. It is possible that this temporary assignment may become permanent. The DCT works closely with front line child protection social workers team leaders and Directors of Operation in the region. Representing both clients from by the Ministry of Children and Family Development and Indigenous Child and Family Service Agencies. The majority of the work within DCT focus on matters within Southern Vancouver Island and the Peace Region however increasingly ad hoc services are being provided outside of that area and across the province.

The successful applicant will appear regularly before the Provincial Court of British Columbia and at alternative dispute resolution processes such as mediation case conferences and traditional Indigenous decision-making processes. The successful candidate will also respond to high volume urgent legal requests primarily throughout Southern Vancouver Island and with respect to challenging child protection matters in other areas of the province upon request.

Preferably we are seeking a lawyer with existing experience in provincial court litigation more specifically experience in the areas of child protection family law or criminal law. The successful applicant will have strong analytical abilities and legal judgment including the ability to communicate complex issues to clients in a timely way. Applicants must be able to respond to urgent time-sensitive matters with an excellent quality of advice taking into consideration both legal obligations and constrains as well as government policies and guidelines.

The successful applicant will work as part of team of lawyers and legal support staff must have strong organizational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities while handling a significant volume of files.

Qualifications:
Education and Experience Requirements

  • Must be a member of the Law Society of British Columbia in good standing with 6 to 11 years of call.
  • Litigation experience in the areas of child protection family law or criminal law in the Provincial Court of British Columbia.
  • Experience in alternative dispute resolution.

Preference may be given to applicants with:

  • Experience working with incorporating and considering diverse perspectives and serving a diverse client base/population.
  • Experience providing legal advice to and working collaboratively with members of Indigenous communities.
  • Experience related to the Ministry of Children and Family Development.
  • Experience with CFCSA.
  • Experience with the Provincial Court (CFCSA) Rules.


Proviso

  • Frequent vehicle travel is required for this position.
