Program Overview:

Respite and Family Support Services offers out of home respite options for families with children who have significant disability-related care needs and who do not have the necessary resources to implement a self-managed respite plan and who may require a longer break than other supports can provide.

The 24 hour shift staffed home provides planned and regular out of home respite for children & youth ages 10 17 years who are not in care and are living with intellectual or developmental disabilities and/or Autism. This comprehensive service also provides enhanced support to families and their children which may include occupational therapy behavioral supports training and counselling with the goal of strengthening families abilities to continue to parent their children at home.

Position Summary:

Under the direction of the Coordinator Team Leader and clinical staff the Treatment Staff Community Respite Services ensures that services are provided in a way that:

  • Promotes high-quality health care support and treatment of the individuals supported
  • Ensures that services are provided to people in ways that are effective efficient holistic and protect the dignity and safety of the person
  • Includes education training and work opportunities
  • Supports the achievement of personal outcomes

The scope of service to individuals includes: implementation of treatment procedures and programs using direct mediated or consultative models of service delivery. These services are provided through intense collaboration with others within an interdisciplinary team model in which the Treatment Staff Community Respite Services is relied upon to collect and analyze relevant data for the residence.

This position reports to the Team Leader.


Qualifications:

Educational:

  • Grade XII Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Certification in CPR and Emergency First Aid
  • Certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention is an asset
  • Successful completion of training requirements during probationary period (e.g. Specialized Behavior Management Training Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Applied Physical Training Medication Administration Orientation Fundamentals in Person Centered Supports)

Professional:

  • Minimum of two years experience providing services to people with disabilities
  • Experience supporting children is preferred
  • Experience working with individuals in crisis an asset
  • Experience providing pre-determined behavioral support plans an asset
  • Knowledge of basic nutrition and household management skills

Duties and Responsibilities:

Consistent with the Mission Philosophy and Policies of the Treatment Staff Community Respite Services is responsible for the provision of residential and support services within assigned residences or service areas. Priority is given to implementing treatment plans that are determined by an interdisciplinary team. Quality services are evident when professional communication timeliness accuracy ethical awareness / sensitivity confidentiality are consistently demonstrated as required by legislation and program/service standards.

Duties include:

  • Provides all aspects of personal care as needed to people supported (e.g. assistance with eating bathing personal grooming toileting etc.)
  • Supports and encourages people to have new relationships and supports people to explore engagement in community activities and may be matched with a person supported to assist them in exploring these relationships and activities (This is known as an exploring pair)
  • Participates in development daily implementation of and collecting data pertaining to the Daily Activity Schedules (DAS) of the people supported
  • Liaises with external agencies school/day programs and community resources in accordance with treatment plan
  • Employs principles of Non-Violent Crisis Intervention in identifying and intervening in situations of challenging behaviour

Bi-Weekly Work Hours Available for Brandon Treatment Staff:

is a bilingual organization. Proficiency in both official languages (French/English) would be considered an asset.
