Description

Under general supervision performs skilled cleaning inspection and maintenance of the wastewater collection system.
Distinguishing Characteristics
Wastewater Collection System Worker I:

This is the entry level in the class at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they this class is often used as a training class employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience. Exercises no supervision.

Wastewater Collection System Worker II/III:
This is the journey level in the class series. Positions at this level are distinguished from the I level by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned working independently and exercising judgment and initiative. Positions at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit. Positions in this class series are flexibly staffed and are normally filled by advancement from lower levels by meeting the minimum requirements successful performance budget availability and management recommendation. When filled from the outside the employee is required to have prior related experience which allows the employee to meet the qualification standards for the position level.

Examples of Duties

Duties may include but are not limited to the following:

  • Maintains cleans and inspects wastewater collection system sewer lines and connections;
  • Lays pipe and makes necessary repairs;
  • Identifies and advises property owners of system status and/or obstructions in their sewer lateral;
  • Responds and investigates sanitary sewer overflows (SSO); evaluates problems and determines appropriate course of action;
  • Responds to customer questions and complaints
  • Operates closed-circuit television (CCTV) inspections camera and GPS-related equipment to inspect document and investigate wastewater collection system;
  • Operates specialized trucks and equipment;
  • Maintains logs of vehicles and equipment;
  • Identifies and locates existing underground sewer lines and manholes utilizing blueprints or GIS System;
  • Participates in public outreach events and promotes wastewater educational material and information;
  • Assists with training new or lower level staff; and
  • Performs related duties and responsibilities as assigned.


Qualifications

Experience:

Wastewater Collection System Worker I:

  • Six months of experience performing general construction or mechanical equipment maintenance involving the use of hand and power tools.

Wastewater Collection System Worker II:

  • Two years of experience in the maintenance of a wastewater collection system and equipment.

Wastewater Collection System Worker III:

  • Four years of experience in the maintenance of a wastewater collection system and equipment.

Education :

Wastewater Collection System Worker I/II/III:

  • Equivalent to a high school diploma.

Licenses and Certificates

Wastewater Collection System Worker I:

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California drivers license.
  • Possession of a California Water Environment Association Grade I Collection System Maintenance certification within 12 months of appointment
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Commercial drivers license with air brake and tanker endorsement within 9 months of appointment.

Wastewater Collection System Worker II:

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Commercial drivers license;
  • Possession of a California Water Environment Association Grade II Collection System Maintenance Certificate;

Wastewater Collection System Worker III:

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid California Commercial drivers license;
  • Possession of a California Water Environment Association Grade III Collection System Maintenance Certificate;
  • Possession of NASSCOs Pipeline Assessment Certification Program (PACP) Lateral Assessment Certification Program (LACP) and Manhole Assessment Certification Program (MACP)

Special Requirements:

Essential functions and duties require the following physical abilities and work environment:

  • Ability to sit stand walk kneel crouch stoop squat crawl twist climb and lift up to 75 lbs.;
  • Exposure to heat noise outdoors vibration confining work space chemicals explosive materials mechanical hazards electrical hazards toxic substances foul odors wastewater sludge effluents bacteria viruses and traffic hazards;
  • Ability to complete safety training as required by assignment;
  • Ability to travel to different sites and locations.
  • Ability to work various shifts and 24 hour call-out on weekends and holidays as assigned. Work requires responding to emergency calls.
