REPORTS TO: Early Childhood Program Director

JOB SUMMARY: The Master Teacher/Center Coordinator is responsible for teaching and maintaining a safe and developmentally appropriate pre-school classroom with the assistance of the Teacher Assistant and Aide. The Master Teacher/Center Coordinator is accountable for preparing and the implementing lesson plans for classroom activities as well as all other duties necessary to provide a quality UPK Program for preschool children. They will be responsible for the supervision of all Pre-K staff; and for all supervisory and management paperwork. The Pre-K Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day operations of all classrooms within the program and will be responsible to act as a liaison between the Watertown School District and Community Action to maintain a positive working relationship.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES: The major responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to the following:

Provide activities for the children in the following areas: initiative language and literacy music and movement logic and mathematics social relations creative representation self-help and social/emotional.

Plan and implement age appropriate activities for preschool children as a group and individually. Submit plans each Thursday prior to the week of implementation to Education Specialist for recommendations and approval.

Complete written observations monthly of children in the classroom for individualized planning and Progress Reports.

Ensure that the classrooms follow appropriate State Education Department guidelines for Health and Safety and perform monitoring visits regularly.

Attend and participate in CPSE meetings for assigned children as appropriate.

Model appropriate behavior for children.

Conduct parent conferences bi-annually to discuss the childs progress.

Complete developmental screening of each child within 45 days of enrollment. Utilize results in planning for individual needs of the children.

Oversee the health tracking and maintain the health files.

Provide Family Service to families Manage appropriate behavior of staff and classroom volunteers.

Conduct an orientation with new staff and volunteers.

Manage and model appropriate behaviors and guidance techniques for subordinates. Master Teacher II / Center Coordinator Starbuck Pre-K.

Supervise Teacher Assistant Teacher Aide substitutes and volunteers. Offer positive feedback as well as suggestions for improvement on a regular basis. Complete performance evaluations as required after 90 days and then annually for each subordinate. Address focus areas and deliver counseling statements as needed.

Utilize the communications system to assure timely information flow.

Attend and actively participate in classroom team meetings monthly Management Team Meetings monthly Pre-K team meetings monthly Education component meetings/trainings as necessary and other meetings as appropriate. Facilitate Center team meetings at least monthly.

Seek appropriate resources for resolution of questions concerns and issues from staff and parents.

Track attendance of children on a weekly basis.

Write monthly newsletter for parents regarding upcoming field trips parent trainings etc.

Schedule field trips and classrooms visitors.

Compile monthly statistics for the End of the Month Report

Distribute interoffice mail to appropriate staff.

Assess and mediate parent concerns. Document outcomes.

Act as a liaison with the Head Start Administrative Team to keep staff current with information.

Consistently upgrade skills as recommended to maximize potential in job performance.

Attend professional development trainings as recommended by supervisor.

Maintain training data sheet to ensure that 15 hours of training annually in all areas on the assigned training log are completed.

Consistently provide program support activities that result in compliance with agency and contractual policies and procedures.

Complete purchase orders for classroom supplies and food items for nutrition experiences as needed. Submit to Director for approval.

Review and sign employee timesheets bi-weekly and submit to Fiscal.

Review and initial employee travel vouchers. Travel vouchers must be submitted at least three times a year to include the final voucher to be submitted within two weeks of the conclusion of the Program year.

Participate in annual self- assessment process.

Participate in interviews of prospective work experience people and staff.

Participate in recruitment; assist in completing applications as needed to establish a waiting list that will ensure that enrollment of 20 children is maintained.

Carry out duties as appropriate at any of the buildings within the Agency.

Complete file reviews and provide feedback as needed.

Maintain classroom coverage by scheduling substitutes as needed.

Provide oversight for the implementation of Pre-K regulations and mandates from the participating school districts.

MINIMUM REQUIRED JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in early childhood education or a bachelors degree and coursework equivalent to a major in ECE. Coursework must include 18 credit hours in ECE and/or child development.

EXPERIENCE: Four years experience in Early Childhood required. Two years supervision required.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: As required by position - not to exceed fifteen (15).

COMPUTER SKILLS: Basic computer skills to include sending and receiving e-mail messages basic word processing and/or data entry. Programs include Google Microsoft Word & Excel and COPA.

OTHER SKILLS: The employee must possess a working knowledge of child development; be supportive in working with diverse families; be able to work with young children; maintain confidentiality of program and agency related information; have excellent communication skills (written and verbal); effective supervisory skills; keep accurate detailed records serve as an advocate for children and their families have strong organization planning time management and problem-solving skills; have knowledge of community resources be able to operate vision and hearing screening machines; and have the ability to work as a member of a team and to cooperate with all Head Start staff to provide quality programming for children and families within the context of the Head Start philosophy and performance standards.

MENTAL AND VISUAL DEMANDS: Requires close mental and visual ability and attention to perform work.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Frequent sitting on the floor standing talking hearing running bending over walking short distances not to exceed one mile. Occasional repetitive motion of hands and wrists finger manipulation to grasp handle or feel different materials; pushing and pulling with arms and/or hands climbing. Occasional lifting up to 40 pounds. Must be able to drive in all weather conditions.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: Work is performed mostly inside with some outside exposure (i.e. playground field trips).

EQUIPMENT USED: Computer printer copier telephone fax. TRAVEL: Local travel during normal business hours. Occasional out-of-town travel to attend trainings.

WORK SCHEDULE: Daytime hours may vary subject to change to ensure appropriate coverage of the classroom and school bus. Occasional evening hours required.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1) This position requires the employee to obtain and maintain a satisfactory physical exam and TB test.

2) Must be able to provide independent transportation to perform job duties. Employee must maintain throughout employment a valid drivers license free from infractions.

3) Preference is given to qualified in-house candidates.

4) Must have medical insurance or will be required to utilize Agency Fringe Benefit for health insurance coverage.

5) All employment is conditional pending Policy Council approval receipt of clearance from the NYS Central Register for Child Abuse & Maltreatment NYS Division of Criminal Justice Services and the Office of Children & Family Services at the time of hire. Additionally employees will be required to sign an affidavit annually which states that they have not been indicated with a child abuse or neglect case within the past year.
