HERE IS WHAT YOU WILL DO

First-Year & Transition Programs in the Office of Student Success seeking an Academic Counselor who will focus on retention by helping students make successful transitions in critical academic program areas through various interventions and initiatives. The role will assist with delivering programs focused on undergraduate students needs primarily those in their first year. The support of these kinds of retention initiatives is an essential part of Georgia State meeting the Strategic Plans goals. These positions are on the front lines of the institutions commitment to helping students from all backgrounds succeed at high rates. The selected individuals will work in conjunction with all resources on behalf of First-Year & Transition Programs to support undergraduate students academic progression.

Essential Job Functions

  • Deliver targeted programming support and outreach to Achieve Atlanta Scholars
  • Coordinate events activities and initiatives focusing on the retention progression and graduation of Achieve Atlanta students
  • Maintain a high level of accessibility to a growing caseload of approximately 500 students by providing for academic and personal concerns serving as an academic counselor to help students identify their potential and eliminate barriers to their academic success
  • Maintain accurate data and records to track the progress of the student population through use of various data tracking platforms.
  • Complete semester data reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide narrative and/or written progress reports as directed including program assessments/evaluations budget reports and program reports
  • Use data and predictive analytics to design timely and strategic interventions for student support
  • Partner with university departments to administer programs for scholars
  • Conduct and lead meetings with campus partners and external stakeholders to report on Achieve Atlanta programming
  • Work with campus partners in University Advisement Center University Career Services Financial Aid and Dean of Students to create robust and enticing events and activities to support the success of students to Achieve Atlanta.
  • Lead hiring training and supervision of Achieve Atlanta ambassadors student workers
  • Answer email inquiries from students instructors faculty and staff
  • Support First-Year & Transition Programs initiatives and events including presentations workshops events outreach administrative processing and other duties as assigned.
  • The Academic Counselor will be expected to teach GSU 1010.

Minimum Hiring Qualifications:

Bachelors degree and four years of related experience; or a combination of education and related

Preferred Hiring Qualifications:

Preference may be given to those who possess a Masters degree and have experience in creating and implementing programs for retention & progression to graduation and success for all students. Experience presenting to small and large groups; effective verbal and written communication.
