The NYC Department of Buildings (DOB) is responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. We facilitate compliant development with integrity efficiency and professionalism. DOBs Office of Human Resources and Employee Experience (HREX) is responsible for ensuring the Department complies with applicable labor and employment laws and City and Agency rules and policies. The unit provides guidance to managers and employees on a variety of topics including recruitment employment civil service job and organizational design labor relations youth programs benefits wellness performance evaluations salary administration timekeeping and time and leave administration.
The Youth Engagement Team establishes learning and internships opportunities through the work of the Department of Buildings. Our programs bring awareness and experience that contribute to the operations initiatives and safety of New York City. These initiatives which foster exposure and real-world learning inform and empower young people.
Please note: This is a year- round internship. The operating work hours for Youth Engagement typically occurs from 9am to 5pm. However there will be days in which you will be required to work outside of those hours. On Wednesdays the workday ends close to 7pm for DOB Next Gen or DOB Scholars programming for 20 weeks out of the calendar year. Intern orientation days may require a start time of 8:30am. Job fairs or community event workday schedules also vary based on opportunity. Notice of schedule adjustments are given in advance to plan accordingly. The Youth Engagement Intern will be eligible to work full-time (a maximum of 35 hours per week) during the summer which is our Agencys most active season and when staff support is especially essential.
Under direction the Youth Engagement Intern will:
- Support the Agencys daily operations of internships externships and fellowships through candidate processing timekeeping and program evaluation
- Assist with the coordination and planning for outreach recruitment and events
- Attend career fairs community events and recruitment events and hiring halls
- Participate in the facilitation of orientations and segments within high school and college level educational programming
- Prepare presentations and informational sessions
- Design materials activities flyers surveys and forms
- Develop strategies to build community and networks amongst past present and future student cohorts
REQUIRED SKILLS
- Strong written verbal and public speaking skills
- Proficiency with Canva Microsoft Excel PowerPoint and Outlook
SALARY INFORMATION
Entering freshman through completion of sophomore year $17.00-$17.85
Entering junior through completion of senior year $17.25-$18.80
First year graduate level $17.50-$19.80
Second year graduate level: $17.50-$21.40
WORK HOURS

Up to 35 hours/week during school break

Qualifications :
For Assignment Level I:
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school.
For Assignment Level II (Information Technology):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology computer science management information systems data processing or closely related field including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study.
For Assignment Level III (Information Technology Fellow):
Matriculation at an accredited college or graduate school. Employment is conditioned upon continuance as a student in a college or graduate school with a specific course of study in information technology computer science management information systems data processing or other area relevant to the information technology project(s) assigned including or supplemented by 9 semester credits in an acceptable course of study. Appointments to this Assignment Level will be made by the Technology Steering Committee through the Department of Information Technology and Telecommunications.
SPECIAL NOTE
Maximum tenure for all Assignment Levels in the title of College Aide is 6 years. No student shall be employed more than half-time in any week in which classes in which the student is enrolled are in session. Students may be employed full-time during their vacation periods.
