Position Type: Contract
Contract Duration: 8 Weeks
Shift: Day Shift 7:00 AM 3:15 PM
Location: New York NY
Float Requirement: Must be willing to float to all Med-Surg units
Job Summary
The Patient Care Associate (PCA) is an essential member of the clinical care team providing direct patient care and support services to promote patient-centered care across assigned units. This role supports Registered Nurses by assisting with activities of daily living performing clinical procedures collecting specimens and maintaining a safe and clean care environment.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Measure record and document vital signs including blood pressure pulse temperature respirations intake and output.
Obtain and document patient pain levels using standardized pain scales (as applicable).
Perform clinical procedures such as specimen collection venipuncture EKGs application of compression devices post-mortem care and skin integrity maintenance.
Assist patients with mobility ambulation positioning and transfers.
Support activities of daily living (ADLs) including feeding bathing toileting mouth care and comfort measures.
Orient patients to the clinical environment and ensure patient safety.
Assist with dietary services including meal tray delivery/collection menu assistance preparation of nutritional supplements and reporting intake concerns to nursing staff.
Maintain a clean safe and functional patient care environment.
Provide one-to-one or close observation for patient safety elopement risk or suicide prevention as directed.
Adhere to isolation precautions under RN supervision and established protocols.
Perform purposeful rounding focused on comfort toileting positioning and pain awareness; document and escalate concerns as needed.
Utilize communication systems in accordance with facility protocols.
Complete reports and perform additional duties as assigned.
Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and respect for patient diversity at all times.
Shared Staff Responsibilities (All Clinical Areas)
Greet visitors and respond to inquiries courteously and professionally.
Answer patient call systems and route requests appropriately.
Transport patients via wheelchair or stretcher as needed.
Assist with unit upkeep including bed-making and trash removal.
Deliver and collect meal trays and patient items.
Operate pneumatic tube systems when required.
Additional Responsibilities (ICU/Specialty Units As Applicable)
Perform discharge bed-making and emergency clean-up.
Transport patients and specimens as required.
Update communication boards and admission/transfer/discharge systems.
Assemble and maintain medical records.
Maintain unit supplies and ensure proper care of equipment.
Skills & Qualifications
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
Ability to prioritize tasks problem-solve and adapt in a fast-paced environment.
Proficient oral and written English communication skills.
Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform required duties.
Education & Certification
High school diploma or equivalent required.
BLS certification required (AHA preferred).
Prior healthcare experience of 39 months preferred.
