Job Summary

The Manual Machinist operates a variety of manual machine tools to fabricate repair or modify metal parts and components according to precise specifications and blueprints. Responsible for setup operation and maintenance of manual shop equipment to ensure accuracy quality and safety throughout the machining processes.

Role and Responsibilities

    • Read and interpret blueprints technical drawings and job orders to determine machining specifications and setup requirements.
    • Set up and operate manual machines including:
    • - Drill Press
    • - Manual Lathe
    • - Band Saw
    • - Rigid Threading Machine
    • - Pencil Grinders
    • Use measuring and layout tools such as tape measures and calipers to ensure work meets specified dimensions and tolerances.
    • Mark materials for machining using layout devices such as tape measures calipers and marking equipment.
    • Cut thread and shape parts with precision utilizing assigned machines to produce required components.
    • Monitor machine operations making adjustments to ensure quality and tolerance requirements are consistently met.
    • Regularly inspect finished pieces using precision measuring tools to verify accuracy and conformance to blueprints.
    • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on machines such as cleaning lubricating and changing machining parts.
    • Follow established safety procedures and guidelines maintaining a safe and organized work environment.
    • Collaborate with other associates engineers and supervisors to resolve manufacturing issues and optimize productivity.
    • Accurately document work performed material use and inspection results as required.

Qualifications and Requirements

    • High School Diploma or equivalent required; technical or vocational training in machining preferred.
    • Minimum 1 year experience operating manual machine shop equipment.
    • Hands-on experience with the following:
    • - Drill Press
    • - Manual Lathe
    • - Band Saw
    • - Rigid Threading Machine
    • - Tape Measure (for layouts and checks)
    • - Calipers (for precision measurements)
    • - Pencil Grinders (for finishing and deburring)
    • Strong understanding of metalworking processes and machining characteristics of various materials.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and drawings.
    • Proficient in understanding and using precise measurement instruments.
    • Detail-oriented with a focus on quality workmanship and safety.
    • Physically able to handle machine operation demands including standing for extended periods lifting and manual handling.
    • Willingness to work overtime or flexible hours as needed.

Working Conditions

    • Industrial machine shop environment with typical exposure to noise grease metal shavings and working machinery.
    • Use of mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety glasses gloves steel-toed boots and hearing protection.
