Work Arrangement:

Onsite: This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to an assigned facility on a full-time basis.

Each successful candidate will be offered an onsite role at a specific location. Candidate location preferences are considered but cannot be guaranteed.

Students will be employed through the University of Buffalo at General Motors. The internship opportunity at General Motors is through a partnership with the University of Buffalo.

Lockport Operations is looking for these types of roles for Summer 2026: Controls Engineering Intern Mechanical Engineering Intern and Industrial Engineering Intern. Please see all job descriptions below.

Manufacturing Controls Engineering Intern

The Team:

Our plants arethegroundwork for GMand a hotbed of innovation. We need controls engineer interns to assist maintenance personnelin operation and maintenance of specialist equipment. As acontrolsengineer intern you would be accountablefor controls engineering and electrical support for engine programs. These tasks would teach you electrical root causing analysis and problem solving as well as leadership skills to provide technical support and direction to support personnel/skilled trades within the organization. Quality and safety are extremely meaningful to us so enforcing safe work practices is the highest priority and implement objectives for ergonomics health/safety and housekeeping which means that you would have to investigate system and equipment problems and provide technical input in problem resolution.

What Youll Do:

• Leads electrical projects including new operations improvements and periodic repair and replacement
• Participates in functional area plant meetings and related activities to represent engineering and to assist in reaching the plants performance goals
• Developscost estimates investment forecasts business cases appropriation requests and plans for minor project activity
• Utilizes statistical methods for continuous improvement on plant systems
• Develops and monitors planning timetables and projects schedules
• Coordinates and communicates the development of changes to improve conditions for the assembly process
• Programming of manufacturing technology
• Analyzes product process and technology to figure out the best methods of manufacture
• Assists in the design and building of tools and equipment or recommends improvements to existing processes

Required Qualifications:

• Pursuit of a Bachelors degree in one of the following areas: Electrical Engineering/Electrical Engineering TechnologyControls Engineering Computer Engineering or Computer Science
• Must be graduating between August 2026 and June 2028
• Able to work full-time 40 hours per week
• Must be willing to work in a plantenvironment

Specific physical requirements of the position include the ability to:

• Walk and stand for prolonged periods of time.
• Read standardized work instructions operate machines and tools and perform quality inspections.
• Promptly detect and respond to safety instructions alarms and signals.
• Wear personal protective equipment for example: safety glasses gloves hats ear plugs and safety shoes.
• Work in a loud manufacturing environment that is not climate controlled (conditions can be hot or cold).
• Frequently and repetitively bend twist kneel crouch and reach to perform work.
• Lift or carry materials weighing up to 15 pounds and periodically carry or lift materials weighing up to 40 lbs.
• Occasionally sit climb (including ladders and lifts) and drive vehicles and equipment.

2026 Manufacturing Mechanical Engineer Intern

We are seeking Manufacturing Mechanical Engineer Interns to do hands-on work that could add directly to the bottom line of our culture and our company. You will have many responsibilities and accountabilities like mechanical support for programs. You will learn how to lead mechanical projects for several different areas of the plant including operations improvements and new and replacement programs. This is a hands-on position in which you may work with periodic repairs and to provide technical support and direction to support personnel/skilled trades.

What Youll Do:

• Mechanical root cause analysis and problem solving
• Analyze product process and technology to figure out the best methods of manufacture
• Assist in the design and building of tools and equipment or recommends improvements to existing processes
• Assist maintenance personnel in operation and maintenance of specialized equipment
• Troubleshoot special maintenance and equipment problem
• Coordinate machinery upgrade projects

We are seeking Industrial Engineer interns to do hands-on work that would potentially add directly to the bottom line of our culture and our company. You would be responsible for analyzing the efficiency of manufacturing operations and changes related to personnel material machines and facilities. Work involves leadership ability critical thinking and communication skills. Makes decisions with mentorship from supervisors.

Responsibilities:

• Confirms or recommends changes to layouts labor control and/or material control
• Frequent contact with others outside the work group
• Assists in developing accurate methods and optimum operation layout
• Makes operation descriptions and performs the vital calculations to complete studies and change routines or other systems of labor and material control

Compensation:

The salary for this role is $22/hour through the University of Buffalo.
