Job Summary

SUMMARY

The Coordinator of Special Education plays a pivotal role in ensuring that students with special needs receive appropriate support accommodations and services to achieve academic success. This position involves collaboration with teachers administrators parents and external agencies to develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and ensure compliance with special education laws and regulations.

DUTIES

  1. Provides a school environment where students may use individual learning styles to be successful
  2. Assists the counselors and mental health staff in working with at-risk students.
  3. Makes parents aware of information about programs policies and resources that are available to students
  4. Assists the Director and leads all departmental staff in the assessment of the educational needs of students the design of programs and strategies to meet such needs and the assessment of the effectiveness of such program designs.
  5. Works with the Director to coordinate and supervise certified and non-certified staff under his/her leadership in the evaluation of the current programs and in proposing revisions deletions from or additions to current programs.
  6. Assists the Director in the selection assignment training and evaluation of all certified and non-certified staff members
  7. Assists the Director with the development of the master schedule and the assignment of staff.
  8. Develops facilitation schedule for general education classes for other departments.
  9. Assists with the orientation mentoring and staff development programs to meet state and federal guidelines for delivery of services for Special Education students including reevaluations individual needs assessment and individualized educational plans.
  10. Compliance monitoring of paperwork and regulations to meet the needs of students and represent the districts interests.
  11. Provides input into selection and purchase of supplementary instructional materials required to meet the unique curricular needs of our students.
  12. Provide ongoing in-service training for mandated changes within the special education laws (i.e. IEPs.)
  13. Works with special education students and 504 students to provide alternate assessment and accommodations
  14. Requesting special testing from state and local testing entities gathering and providing accurate documentation
  15. Scheduling students and staff according to accommodations
  16. In servicing staff to meet accommodation needs according to standardized instructions
  17. Monitoring of materials for test security
  18. Accommodating schedules of students who are not being tested
  19. Coordinating out of district students
  20. Coordinating final exam schedules and alternate schedules for all students within the department..
  21. Works with Guidance for coordination of schedules for students facilitation for general education classes self-contained classes and advisory.
  22. Coordinates and supervises special education summer school program (staffing transportation etc.)
  23. Coordinates and conducts team meetings.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education and School Supports

QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Minimum of five (5) years teaching experience; Masters Degree in Educational Administration required.
  2. ISBE Type 75 General Administrative Certificate
  3. ISBE Secondary or Special Teaching Certificate with LBSI Endorsement
  4. Previous administrative experience preferred
  5. Extensive knowledge of pedagogy instructional leadership and curriculum development
  6. Knowledge of and experience supporting students considered at-risk
  7. Strong oral and written communication skills
  8. Superior work habits and work ethic self motivated
  9. Excellent communications skills written and verbal
