The Financial Counselor plays a key role in revenue cycle process by providing patients with financial guidance related to medical expenses insurance benefits and payment options. Under the direction of Patient Financial Services leadership this role ensures that patients understand their financial responsibilities while identifying opportunities for financial assistance.
This position is responsible for collecting payments setting up payment plans generating cost estimates and reviewing self-pay balances. The Financial Counselor assists patients in applying for Trinity Healths financial assistance program government aid and other financial resources. Additionally this role manages delinquent accounts coordinates with collection agencies and ensures compliance with hospital policies regarding financial transactions.
This position requires strong problem-solving skills independent decision-making and the ability to manage multiple financial tasks in a fast-paced environment.

Educational Requirements
- Associate degree in business healthcare or related field preferred.
Experience Requirements
- 1 year of experience of billing collections or financial counseling in a healthcare environment required.
- 2 years of customer service experience in healthcare required.
- Previous experience in collections revenue cycle or financial counseling preferred.
- Familiarity with insurance billing reimbursement processes and patient financial assistance programs is a plus.
Special Skills or Training Requirements
- Proficiency in hospital billing systems payor portals and Microsoft Office Suite (Excel Word Outlook).
- Strong understanding of insurance terminology coverage verification and financial assistance eligibility.
- Excellent problem-solving organizational and communication skills to manage patient financial needs.
- Ability to explain complex financial concepts in a clear and empathetic manner.
- Strong customer service skills emotional intelligence and professionalism when working with patients.
- Ability to work independently prioritize tasks and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
