ABOUT THE POSITION




The Riverside County Sheriffs Office has an opportunity for a Supervising Sheriff Corrections Assistant in Banning. The incumbent will administer a large and complex clerical operation and supervise a staff performing specialized clerical work in the Corrections Bureau; and to do related work as required.

The Supervising Sheriff Corrections Assistant is the supervisory level classification in the Sheriff Corrections Assistant series. Incumbents of this class typically report to a Lieutenant and are assigned responsibility for supervising and coordinating the operations of the jail facility Business Office.

The Supervising Sheriffs Corrections Assistant differs from the Supervising Office Assistant by the former having responsibility for planning organizing and directing Sheriff Corrections Assistants and other staff engaged in highly complex and specialized clerical duties in a detention facility Business Office.


EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Plans directs schedules supervises trains and evaluates the work of clerical and other staff providing guidance to staff in resolving technical problems.

Verifies documents are complete and accurate on complex inmates booking files whether they are new booking files being transferred to State Department of Corrections or another jurisdiction or release files.

Processes civil and criminal subpoenas and appears as a witness in court.

Interprets complex court sentencing documents and defines the length of inmate sentence(s).

Verifies large sums of cash bail fine money and deposits.

Reviews special inmate releases to ensure facility occupancy remains below federal requirements.

Verifies Penal Code and bail applications relating to the booking holding and release of inmates.

Verifies court documents and release paperwork for accuracy before inmate release.

Responds to inmate writ(s) of habeas corpus subpoenas and court orders.

Investigates citizen complaints relating to business office operations.

Receives calls from the public and assists in answering inquiries involving inmates suspects and other legal related issues.

Recommends establishes and revises departmental policies and procedures to ensure compliance with all federal state and departmental laws rules and regulations.

Prepares and submits employee evaluations on staff assigned to the Business Office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:
OPTION I: Two years of experience as a Sheriffs Corrections Assistant I with the County of Riverside.

OPTION II:One year of experience as a Sheriffs Corrections Assistant II with the County of Riverside.

OPTION III:Three years of clerical experience including one year in a lead or supervisory position which included preparing and processing legal documents and assigning and reviewing the work of clerical staff.

Additional Requirements:
License: Possession of a valid drivers license is required.

Work Schedule: Must be able to work all shifts including evenings nights weekends and holidays.

Knowledge of:
Principles and techniques of supervision and training; the laws standards and liabilities pertaining to detention facility operations; statistical methods and record keeping procedures; departmental policies and procedures regulating County detention facilities; the relationships between agencies within the criminal justice system; interviewing techniques; principles of effective organization and management of correctional services; correct English usage including spelling grammar and punctuation; modern office practices and procedures; information processing equipment standard office software programs and specialized criminal information software programs.

Ability to: Supervise plan schedule assign organize coordinate and evaluate the work of others; train subordinate employees; develop and maintain complex files record and report systems; understand interpret and implement laws rules regulations and policies; exercise independence in making decisions in accordance with departmental policies; think and act decisively in stressful situations; establish effective working relationships with department staff other county departments outside agencies and communicate tactfully and courteously with the public; act as a liaison with the courts state Federal and other governmental agencies effectively resolving discrepancies and problems; establish and revise policies and procedures based on laws codes and regulations.
