Job Summary
This position is responsible for providing customer-oriented support and maintenance of systems in Microbiology & Immunology. The incumbent will upkeep desktop systems administration providing hardware and software support and will support the audio-visual services for department events and user meetings. They will coordinate IT information from various research labs and units establish good management and procedures for handling sensitive user and research data and train staff on how to use new technologies or follow procedures.

Organizational Status
This position reports to the Systems Administrator and supports the delivery of IT services to the department and research groups. Works independently and jointly within a team of IT technical staff to provide services to 250 faculty staff research trainees in a heterogeneous environment. Collaborates with faculty research trainees and staff to solve problems and provide solutions. Interacts directly with other University technology professionals as required.

Work Performed

  • Supports a wide variety of desktop and research-specific software for Ubuntu Linux MacOS and Windows operating systems. Some of the software and/or packages are very unique and niche to a particular research focus.

  • Performs analysis diagnosis and resolution of complex desktop problems for users recommends and implements corrective solutions and enters all support incidents into the ticketing system following established prioritizations and procedures.

  • Onboards and off-boards faculty staff and students in compliance with departmental and university standards.

  • Installs configures tests and troubleshoots workstations and related hardware and software.

  • Performs preventative maintenance tasks troubleshoots and repairs re-purposes and retires department desktops laptops and other computing devices.

  • Creates maintains and refines internal documentation to ensure workflows processes and deployment methods are clearly captured and easy for team members to follow.

  • Updates and validates inventory records regularly ensuring accuracy completeness and alignment with operational and reporting requirements.

  • Responsible for supporting AV within meeting rooms and lecture theatres using Microsoft Teams and Zoom for meetings workshops seminars and symposiums.

  • Investigates bug reports determines their priority and validity and communicates relevant information. This includes numerous internal and external facing web applications.

  • Provides ongoing training to staff faculty and students on new technologies and best practices based on internal operating procedures following UBC and end-user technical documentation.

  • Develops instructional materials and provides training for users in use and configuration of software hardware network systems and peripheral equipment.

  • Provides advice on information technology improvements services and procedures

  • Deploys new hardware software networking and security updates.

  • Coordinates computer peripheral and software license purchases with our research community.

  • Reviews end-user requirements and provides recommendations for software and hardware purchases.

  • Develops backup plans to ensure data is safe from loss or damage.

  • Maintains records of computer system activity including system-use time and network traffic flows.

  • Provides additional support for physical and virtual servers.

  • Redirects the electronic waste for the department and coordinates secure destruction of hard drives.

  • Performs other related duties as required


Consequence of Error/Judgement
Decisions and actions will have a direct impact on how efficiently and effectively departmental applications will perform and function. Errors in judgment poor development or failure to act could have a detrimental effect on these applications result in data loss or exposure of personal information and could significantly impact the educational and research mission of the department and damage UBCs reputation.

Poor quality of work will result in systems with usability issues that will lead to user dissatisfaction and frustration. Work will involve sensitive data and it is expected to follow all UBC Information Security Standards (ISS) Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act and university policies while exercising good judgment diplomacy and tact in all interactions.

The position works independently under the supervision of the Systems Administrator of Microbiology & Immunology. Work is reviewed in terms of completeness accuracy and timeliness.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate degree in a relevant discipline. Minimum of two years of related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience in managing computer systems and applications.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and experience supporting Red Hat/CentOS/Ubuntu Linux Microsoft Windows virtualization technologies network stack complex storage systems (e.g. ZFS) database systems and scripting/programming languages such as Python Perl Bash Java PowerShell and PHP.

  • Customer service experience preferably in a help desk or enterprise environment using problem-tracking software.

  • Experience sharing best practices in information technology with an emphasis on infrastructure as a service virtualization storage web hosting and private and public cloud environments.

  • Ability to foster a safe respectful and inclusive environment for staff and the research community.

  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current information technology tools practices and industry trends.

  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships

  • Ability to recognize and appreciate various points of view including clients peers and management

  • Thorough understanding of operationalization and management of enterprise services and technologies
