The mission of the Orange Coast College library is to support and complement the college mission of promoting student success by providing a wide range of basic to in-depth resource materials library instruction and encouragement of lifelong learning. At the same time the library staff serves as a central and vital link for the informational and enrichment needs of all campus personnel.


The library maintains a print media and online collection of resources built around the college curriculum. The library maintains a collection of best sellers for the enrichment of staff students and community users. The library has one or more copies of every textbook sold in the college bookstore available for 2 hour use in the library.Interlibrary loan is available to access hard-to-find materials. We provide photocopiers scanners media viewing stations and a computer lab to allow students to perform more effectively. To help develop the library and information competency skills of our students the librarians provide library lectures to classes library workshops for students and a transferable GE option course Library 100. The library further helps students faculty and staff by providing reference services. The library offers an academic environment in which to study collaborate in group study rooms borrow from our large collection of textbooks and other materials access electronic resources and receive professional assistance from faculty librarians for their research and information needs.

About The Role
The Library Media Technician provides paraprofessional library services which may include scheduling and oversight of student employees at the circulation desk training for and assignment of student duties at circulation shelving cleaning books and other services as determined by the Public Services Librarian in consultation with the library faculty direct assistance to library patrons processing fines and fees detailed use of the library automation system (Alma) copy cataloging on the OCLC system and pulling records into Alma processing new books record correction and maintenance in the library database awareness and troubleshooting of the computer lab and printing services interaction and configuration of the Paper Cut print payment system and its interaction with the campus software and student support of any software the district makes available in the library computer lab.

Summary
Provides a variety of paraprofessional library services including but not limited to technical support for automated library services administrative support to the Librarian partial leadership over day-to-day library operations and advanced assistance to library patrons.

Distinguishing Career Features
The Library Media Technician is the second level in a technical career ladder for library support. Advancement to this level requires compliance with the education and experience requirements and a demonstrated ability to provide a full range of customer services encompassing circulation copy cataloging. Advancement to this level requires the ability to serve as a customer services team leader and overseeing other staff in providing service to library users.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Specific duties may vary among departments divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties as assigned:
1. Coordinates and performs circulation services. Communicates library procedures and practices in areas such as but not limited to public service library and reserve policies. May schedule circulation staff to accommodate fluctuations in customers.
2. Assists students staff and the public by answering questions on the use of the library internal and external resources and location of materials. Provides instruction on the use of computers in the library. Processes a full range of library material and fee transactions.
3. Conducts walk-and-talk orientations for student-patrons in areas such as general use of the library periodicals bibliographic search internet search or use of electronic media.
4. Processes student Cal-West consortia inter-library loan requests. Searches and transfers requested materials to locations and individuals.
5. Processes and maintains records for requests receipts and returns of library system materials. Maintains records for lost and overdue books fines. May enter into transcript holds based on student account balances.
6. May mend and repair book and non-book materials. Disposes of damaged or outdated materials according to established procedures Board policy and state law.
7. Conducts and may coordinate annual physical inventory of all library materials.
8. Oversees computer lab maintaining computers and printers ensures software is current and functional and collaborates with IT to accomplish updates and repairs when needed.
9. Troubleshoots printers and computers both software and hardware problems when they arise and collaborates with IT to accomplish updates and repairs when needed.
10. Oversees the Paper Cut system software and hardware. Resolves problems with student printing problems. Manages cash handling and prepares cash for deposit to Bursars Office account. Collaborates with IT and Bursars Office for repairs or problem resolution.
11. Manages scheduling and maintenance of media rooms in library and the technology inside the rooms and collaborates with IT to accomplish updates and repairs when needed.
12. Assists students with computer issues questions and training in the computer lab.
13. Hiring and training new employees in circulation and media areas.
14. Updates and ensures accuracy of department policies and procedures manuals for circulation.
15. Collects and reports data for annual statistics reports as required.
16. Communicates library policies and hours ensuring website is updated and signs posted.
17. Using foundation budget selects and purchases textbooks for reserve collection justifying expenses against invoices.
18. Manages cash in register with daily reconciliation to software ledger. Stores cash in safe until deposited with Bursar.
19. Opens and/or closes the building for daily activities.
20. Maintains reports of items cataloged and cataloging activities statistics for internal library use and annual surveys.
21. Runs and processes reports of long overdue items for collection development purposes: either re-purchase or deletion from the collection.
22. Searches and downloads bibliographic descriptions of materials purchased or acquired into the library catalog according to local policy and accepted national cataloging standards.
23. Maintains data accuracy of description of books and library materials in the online catalog resolving errors and conflicts on bibliographic records.
24. Receives reviews and updates subject and name authority headings in the online catalog when notified of changes from a vendor of authority headings.
25. Participates in statewide meetings on new technology and practices concerning library software.
26. Collects and reports statistics on departmental activities.
27. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
28. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 Code of Professional Ethics.

1. The position requires an in-depth procedural knowledge of library methods practices and terminology including use of library catalog.
2. Requires an understanding of the Library of Congress classification and the American Library Association rules for cataloging.
3. Requires a basic knowledge of machine-readable classification and coding.
4. Requires a working knowledge of automated library systems and records.
5. Needs to have a thorough understanding of library operations goals and objectives.
6. Requires sufficient human relations skills to convey specialized concepts to students to resolve urgent student needs and communicate with librarians faculty and vendors.
7. Requires sufficient arithmetic skills to arrange materials in numerical sequences and to calculate sums.
8. Requires sufficient writing skills to document instructions on use of library services.

Education and Experience
The position requires an Associates degree in library science curriculum or equivalent and two years of experience in an academic library setting. A post-secondary Library Certificate and four years of experience may be accepted. Or any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position.

This is an IN-HOUSE ONLY - permanent general funded full-time 12-months per year classified position. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Thursday 11:00 am to 8:00 pm and Saturday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends if necessary to meet the departments needs. The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical dental and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. (Salary Schedule: EE-114 2.5% Weekend Shift-Partial Shift Differential)

Pay Philosophy:
