Job Description
We are seeking a highly capable and commercially astute Senior Legal Advisor to join our listed clients legal team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a seasoned legal professional looking to transition into a role where their expertise directly shapes business strategy. You will play an instrumental role in managing the full spectrum of legal requirements for a fast-paced business unit working closely with divisional management and the Group General Counsel.
This role offers significant exposure to complex commercial negotiations high-stakes M&A activity and critical regulatory engagement. You will move beyond pure technical review leveraging your commercial acumen to provide pragmatic solution-driven advice that mitigates risk while enabling business growth. Responsibilities
- Act as the primary legal advisor for the Enterprise Division interpreting complex regulatory requirements and engaging proactively with relevant regulatory bodies.
- Draft scrutinize negotiate and finalize a wide array of commercial agreements including intricate arrangements with financiers suppliers and key commercial partners.
- Provide dedicated legal support throughout the M&A lifecycle encompassing due diligence transaction document drafting/negotiation and implementation management for group acquisitions.
- Proactively identify assess and develop robust risk mitigation strategies for the divisions product offerings processes and functional areas.
- Interpret existing contractual arrangements providing clear commercially focused advice to senior management and the executive team to support strategic decision-making.
- Oversee and manage all litigation and legal disputes efficiently instructing and managing external counsel where required.
- Ensure the organization remains abreast of all relevant legislative developments (e.g. Companies Act FICA NCR POPIA) and advise on necessary proactive adjustments.
Requirements
Must-Haves (Essential)
Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from an accredited South African university.
Minimum of 8 years post-articles experience gained at a top-tier South African law firm or demonstrable equivalent in-house experience.
Exceptional ability to draft review and negotiate complex commercial agreements.
Strong commercial mindset with a focus on practical business-oriented legal solutions rather than purely technical analysis.
Nice-to-Haves (Beneficial)
Prior in-house experience particularly within the national payments sector or broader financial services industry.
Direct hands-on experience advising on legislation such as the National Payment Systems Act and PASA frameworks.
Exposure to managing or overseeing litigation and dispute resolution processes.
Proven ability to work independently take initiative and perform effectively in a fast-paced high-pressure environment.
