Overview
This is a temporary part time position.
The Lifeguard is responsible for the safety and supervision of the pool area during swim programs.
At theLifeskills and Education for Students with Autism and Pervasive Behavioral Challenges (LEAP) Program our mission is to ensure each of our students gains the independence and skills necessary to fully participate in school community workplace and home life.
Our specialized autism program is a nonpublic special education day program approved by the Maryland State Department of Education.
We offer a range of educational and therapeutic services for students with complex academic communication social and behavioral needs. Our program emphasizes the development of lifelong skills through an active approach to learning including participation in community and work-based learning opportunities that allow them to apply skills outside of the classroom.
Responsibilities
- Provide supervision of pool area ensuring the safety of all pool participants. Maintain safe and clean environment for aquatic activities.
- Identify emergencies and carry out appropriate life-saving techniques in accordance with all policies and procedures for minor and major medical emergencies.
- Test pool chemical levels and maintain daily records of readings as noted in the Kennedy Krieger Institute Aquatics Policies and Procedures.
- Oversee pool security by controlling access of students and staff during program hours.
- Assist in the supervision of locker rooms and transitional areas. Assist students and staff entering/exiting pool and pool areas.
- Set up maintain and clean treatment areas. Ensure student and staff safety hygiene and privacy according to student-specific and standard precautions.
- Inventory secure clean and maintain all instructional equipment
- Notify supervisor or Facilities department as appropriate of any conditions relating to the pool that may require attention.
- Execute various transfer techniques using proper body mechanics and assistive devices requesting assistance as needed.
Qualifications
- Must possess and maintain valid and current certification as a Lifeguard.
- Must possess and maintain First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
- Must achieve and maintain Professional Crisis Management (PCM) training certification at the appropriate level and according to the timeline established within the departmental policy. Opportunities for training will be provided by the department.
- Pool Operator certification preferred.
High School Diploma or GED required.
1 year of prior experience as a lifeguard in a therapeutic setting preferred.
