About the opportunity

This research-focused appointment will contribute to two externally funded projects advancing sustainable fisheries and environmental management. The first project applies molecular forensic techniques to trace and verify seafood provenance supporting regulatory compliance and fisheries management. The second project explores eDNA as a non-invasive tool for better understanding ecosystem response to oxygen supplementation in Macquarie Harbour. The successful candidate will work collaboratively within a team environment to aid in the development of innovative molecular approaches that inform policy and practice in fisheries and environmental research. This role is with the Institute for Marine & Antarctic Studies and sits within the Aquaculture Environment team with close linkages to the Forensic Fisheries Lab.

What youll do:

  • Undertake molecular laboratory work across a range of sample types.
  • Manage and analyse sequencing data building bioinformatic pipelines.
  • Implement and develop molecular methods to better understand oxygen dynamics within Macquarie Harbour.
  • Enhance accessibility of data streams using platforms such as R studio Tasmanian Marine Atlas and ArcGIS.
  • Undertake high-quality research/scholarly activities under limited supervision either independently or as a member of a team.

What were looking for:

  • A four-year tertiary qualification in marine sciences.
  • A demonstrated ability and understanding of research in the fields of molecular biology aquaculture environment interactions and applied environmental science.
  • Demonstrated experience in molecular techniques including DNA extraction amplification and sequencing using Oxford Nanopore Technology and/or Illumina sequencing and handling bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Demonstrated experience in the analysis interpretation and display of data using R Studio.
  • Experience in handling large datasets including proficiency and familiarity with the IMMERSE database and Tasmanias Marine Atlas.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at Academic Level A and will have a total remuneration package of up to $125877 comprising base salary within the range of $83198 to $107587 plus 17% superannuation.
