Position - BMS LEAD

Key Responsibilities
- Develop end-to-end BMS architecture for utility-scale BESS (cell module rack system).
- Define hardware software communication sensing protection and redundancy requirements.
- Select topology: centralized / modular / distributed BMS design for containerized BESS.
- Own CAN bus RS485 Ethernet Modbus or proprietary protocol design.
- Allocate safety functions between BMS PCS EMS and system controllers.
- Lead development of algorithms for SOC SOH SOE estimation
- Cell balancing strategies (passive/active)
- Fault detection thermal derating voltage/current limits
- Aging degradation models
- Define charge/discharge control logic aligned with grid-connected use cases (frequency regulation peak shaving energy shifting hybrid storage).
- Ensure accurate measurement systems for voltage current temperature isolation resistance and HVIL.
- Drive compliance with battery safety standards
- Ensure safety design for cell over-temp thermal runaway overcurrent isolation loss and fire-event interaction.
- Work closely with thermal fire safety and FMEA teams to ensure TR propagation mitigation strategies.
- Define safety matrix and functional safety requirements
- Lead selection of BMS ICs microcontrollers isolators ADCs and cell monitoring chips.
- Guide firmware development for Sensor polling CAN communication Protection logic Diagnostics
- Fail-safe modes Review PCB design for module BMS rack BMS and system controller.
- Integrate BMS with Pack/rack design (electrical mechanical) PCS / inverter EMS / site controller HVAC/thermal system Fire detection/suppression system
- Define interface control documents (ICDs) and communication protocols.
- Lead root-cause analysis (RCA) for field issues involving SOC drift cell imbalance thermal faults and communication failures.
- Develop test plans for HIL/SIL testing Pack/rack functional tests Environmental testing Aging and cycle tests
- Lead FAT SAT and prototype validation with engineering and field teams.
- Ensure BMS behaviour under fault conditions (HV isolation failure over-temp rapid charge/discharge spikes).
- Support UL/IEC certification testing and documentation.
- Guide BMS improvements based on field performance degradation data and warranty feedback.
- Manage vendor BMS qualification (if using third-party BMS platforms).
- Own documentation: design requirements schematics firmware release notes safety analyses.
- Mentor team members and guide development of next-generation BMS roadmap.
Required Qualifications
Bachelors or Masters in Electrical / Electronics / Embedded Systems / Power Engineering or similar.
Advanced degree in Battery Technology is a plus.
Technical Skills
- Deep knowledge of Li-ion cell chemistry (LFP/NMC) operating envelopes safety limits.
- Expertise in BMS algorithms (SOC/SOH/SOE) thermal derating and protection logic.
- Proficiency in CAN Modbus serial communication and real-time embedded systems.
- Experience with HIL/SIL tools (dSPACE NI Opal-RT Typoon).
- Understanding of pack architecture high-voltage systems and thermal management.
- Experience with UL / IEC certification for battery systems.
Experience
- 10 15 years in BMS development for BESS EV UPS or industrial battery systems.
- Minimum 3 years leading BMS hardware/firmware teams.
- Experience with utility-scale (1 200 MWh) BESS systems is strongly preferred.
- Field or commissioning experience is a plus.
