The surgical technologist functions as a member of the surgical team to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical therapeutic and diagnostic procedures. The surgical technologist collaborates with the team to ensure that the operating room environment is safe that equipment functions properly and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The Surgical Technologist I (Skilled) is proficient in the role of first or second scrub person or assistant circulator during procedures within one specialty area.

Is aware of center compliance requirements for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of center administrative staff.

The Certified Surgical Technologist functions in the role of first scrub or assistant to the surgeon to the extent of their experience and competency. He/She is responsible for maintaining the integrity safety and efficiency of the sterile field throughout the operation. The Certified Surgical Technologist:
The Certified Surgical Technologist may assist the circulating registered nurse in the operating room to meet the patients individual needs.
Demonstrates an awareness of patient and personal safety.
- Observes and promptly reports any unusual occurrences.
- Practices correct body mechanics in performing patient care activities.
- Consistently assures patient safety in the use of side rails equipment nurse call lights etc.
Organizes cleans and maintains unit work areas supplies and equipment.
Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills with other health care team members.
Demonstrates flexibility and self-direction in meeting patient and unit needs by responding as a team player.
Assumes responsibility for personal growth and development.
- Continually maintains and strives to enhance personal technical and clinical competence in all job related duties.
Participates in mandatory education and department and center staff meetings per established guidelines.
Complies with established infection control and risk management policies and procedures.
Performs other duties as deemed necessary to meet the centers mission and vision.
Education
Requires high school diploma or GED and graduation from an accredited surgical technology program or eligibility to take the CST exam.
Qualifications/Experience
The newly graduated Surgical Technologist must obtain certification within 12 months of hire date to maintain employment.
All grandfathered CSTs must maintain CEUs as defined by the Liaison Council on Certification for Surgical Technologists (LCCST). (60 CEUs every 4 years)
