The Mid-Market Underwriting Manager is a critical leadership role responsible for driving growth delivering an exceptional customer experience and ensuring continuous improvement in quality and decision-making within our mid-market segment. This role requires a unique balance of technical underwriting expertise and inspirational people leadership.
The successful candidate will lead a dynamic team of underwriting account managers and customer service specialists focusing on building an engaged curious empowered and accountable culture. - Lead and Engage the Team: Build a high-performing engaged team that takes ownership for results and growth. Foster a culture of curiosity inclusion and continuous learning where every team member feels valued and empowered to contribute ideas. Encourage accountability through clear expectations regular feedback and visible recognition of contributions and outcomes ensuring the team understands how their work connects to delivering an exceptional experience for customers and agency partners.
- Develop People and Future Talent: Provide coaching mentoring and individualized development plans to strengthen underwriting and customer experience capability while fostering career growth. Create opportunities and learning experiences that build judgment technical skill and confidence and identify and develop individuals within the team to ensure strong succession and depth of expertise.
- Drive Excellence and Quality: Ensure underwriting decisions are technically sound consistent and aligned with company risk appetite and guidelines. Use customer feedback and performance data to continuously refine processes and improve customer experience implementing review and feedback processes that reinforce learning and quality improvement. Partner interdepartmentally on projects to inform and refine pricing strategies and use data and insights to identify trends improve decision accuracy and strengthen book performance.
- Promote Efficiency and Speed-to-Market: Simplify workflows and remove barriers to improve underwriting and customer support turnaround time without compromising quality. Encourage proactive decision-making and empower individuals to take timely informed action within authority levels. Collaborate cross-functionally to enhance processes tools and automation that enable faster smarter decision-making.
- Model Leadership and Cultural Values: Lead with empathy curiosity and integrity setting the tone for collaboration trust and respect. Demonstrate adaptability and resilience in managing change and guiding others through it. Champion a culture that balances high performance with genuine care for people and customers and serve as a visible advocate for continuous improvement and innovation within the team function.
- Drive Financial and Operational Performance: Achieve financial and operational goals for loss ratio growth and customer retention. Monitor performance metrics ensure accountability and take timely action to address gaps effectively balancing long-term strategic priorities with near-term business results.
Required Experience
What you will need (minimum qualifications):
- Must have or obtain within the first six (6) months of employment a current valid Montana Casualty Producer License.
- Bachelors degree.
- AND a combination of five (5) years progressively responsible workers compensation insurance experience in sales underwriting or agency/key client relationship management.
- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred:
Job Location:This position requires occasional presence in the Helena MT office.
Working conditions:
Fast paced general office environment. Some stress may occur. Regular travel not expected but may occur occasionally around organizational specific events or during the course of employment. Requires sitting for extended periods of time standing visual acumen manual dexterity detailed verbal communications and fine finger manipulation for working with computer keyboards.
Compensation and Benefits: Pay range MGR. Starting salary for this exempt position begins at $86300 - $107900.
