POSITION SUMMARY

Employees of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia (Assembly) provide professional non-partisan services to support the democratic institution of Parliament and its members through procedural advice administrative support and information services. The Assembly is an autonomous employer separate from the administrative framework of B.C. government ministries and agencies.

The Office of the Sergeant-at-Arms is seeking up to five attentive diplomatic and service-oriented individuals for the auxiliary as-and-when position of Sessional Officer.

Reporting to the Gallery Chamber Corridor or Security Scanning Supervisor the Sessional Officers facilitate and control access of MLAs and others who have legitimate access to the Chamber galleries corridors and/or committee rooms and provide security-related duties during House sittings committee meetings and support the security screening process for all members of the public who enter the Parliament Building. They prepare the Chamber galleries corridors and associated rooms and facilities for use and secure them afterwards. The position must be cognizant of the high profile of the Legislature and ensure all undertaken issues are handled with tact and discretion and follow protocol.

Sessional Officers work a fluctuating work schedule. Work hours are as-needed and can fall between 8:30am and 7:00pm Mondays through Thursdays when the House is in session. When the House is in session typical hours for a Sessional Officer are 28 hours per week. Other work is available during visitor hours on an as needed basis when the House is not in session. Visitor hours are 8:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday and are seven days per week during the summer months. QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must be/have:

  • Completion of grade 12 plus a minimum of one year of experience in an administrative or customer service environment or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in communicating effectively and interacting in a tactful professional and courteous manner with various office staff and the public.
