About the opportunity

The Residential Communities Officer (RCO) is a key student-facing role within the Universitys Campus Accommodation network which supports a diverse cohort of students across Hobart Sandy Bay Launceston and Burnie. The position focuses on delivering a high-quality welcome and transition experience engaging with residents to support health wellbeing and academic progress and responding empathetically to student needs.

Aligned with the Residential Communities Strategy the RCO works under the Dean of Students to help create safe vibrant and uniquely Tasmanian residential communities. The role requires collaboration innovation and flexibility including working outside standard hours for student events. Core principles guiding this work include being resident-focused connected and sustainable fostering belonging shared growth and student-led leadership.

What youll do:

  • Students living in residential colleges feel safe and well supported through positive empathetic and timely responses from RCOs to any concerns raised.
  • Regular Check-in meetings conducted (one-on-one pastoral care meetings) with student College residents.
  • Evidence of sound judgment effective risk assessments and appropriate response in relation to behaviours and incidents (including critical incidents) which aligns with procedures especially in relation to student resident welfare.
  • Support the Dean of Students through regular engagement with student bodies and broader student-led groups to support the development and delivery of student resident engagement programs and student-led events and initiatives which contribute to a thriving student community and which develops a sense of belonging for all.
  • This role will be required to work shifts outside ordinary hours - including attending student-facing events.

What were looking for:

  • Excellent cultural competency combined with experience working and effectively supporting people from culturally diverse backgrounds and communities.
  • Demonstrated capacity to take a people-centred and safety-first response to complex and critical incidents in accordance with Work Health and Safety legislation and University Policies and Procedures.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in digital tools and platforms including Microsoft Office (Word Excel) and information management systems.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills with evidence of a strong people-centred communication style.

Qualifications and Licences:

  • A degree level qualification with relevant subsequent experience in a human services or education-related organisation or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
  • Current Tasmanian Registration to Work with Vulnerable People (Registration Status - Employment).
  • Drivers licence
  • First Aid (desirable)
  • Mental Health First Aid (desirable)

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $116872 (pro-rata for part-time) comprising base salary within the range of $92120 to $99891 (pro-rata for part-time) plus 17% superannuation.
