POSITION SUMMARY:
Working in close partnership with the Boston Medical Center Health System Chief Operating Officer (COO) and the Chair of Medicine the Vice President (VP) of the Department of Medicine (DOM) holds a pivotal leadership role. The VP is accountable for guiding a broad portfolio of functions including administrative operations fiscal planning and oversight clinical operations and strategy research systems leadership development regulatory compliance and administrative close collaboration with DOM BMCHS leadership and the Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine (CAMed) the VP evaluates designs implements and monitors process improvements that advance clinical research and educational excellence. A central priority of this role is fostering a culture of timely responsive accurate and high-quality administrative support for all missions of the DOM.
The VP works in partnership with BMCHS leadership DOM Section Chiefs and Vice Chairs and CAMed Center Directors and leadership. Together with the Chair and COO the VP develops and executes a multi-year plan to integrate activities and administrative structures in the DOM across BMCHS. This effort requires strategic insight organizational acumen and interpersonal sensitivity during a period of significant change. At the same time the VP must build a cohesive administrative leadership team capable of driving integration while ensuring the smooth functioning of day-to-day operations across clinical care research and education.
As the largest clinical department within BMCHS the DOM comprises more than 500 faculty 1500 staff and an annual budget of an approximately $200 million.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES
The following is a high-level representative list of responsibilities for the Vice President of Medicine role:
Leadership
- In partnership with the Chair and COO defines the vision mission goals and objectives of the DOM and its affiliated clinical services. Directs strategic planning establishes long-range goals and ensures implementation of business plans aligned with the organizations vision and priorities.
- Leads efforts to align and integrate DOM operations in the areas of analytics communications human resources finance operations and compensation.
- Evaluates and recommends new business ventures affiliations and partnerships that support departmental and BMCHS growth objectives. Oversees renewals and ongoing management of these relationships.
- Develops and implements policies and procedures in clinical practice management research administration and education/training ensuring alignment with BMC CAMed and BU Charles River Campus policies.
- Continuously evaluates and improves systems procedures and expense management to maximize efficiency.
- Serves as a central resource for resolving complex administrative challenges.
- Collaborates with hospital leadership DOM Sections Chiefs and DOM Vice Chairs for Clinical Affairs and Quality & Safety to support cost containment quality improvement patient safety and patient experience.
- Maintains effective transparent communication with the Chair COO hospital leaders faculty staff and CAMed leadership.
- Stays current with trends in healthcare strategy financial models analytic tools and emerging technologies.
- Cultivates a culture of collaboration trust transparency and accountability among faculty and staff.
- Partners with BMCHS and CAMed leadership to ensure research and educational priorities are integrated with clinical and operational goals.
- Oversees the administration of appointments and promotions.
- Partners with the Chair and CAMed and BMCHS development teams to devise and execute a strategy to increase philanthropy to the department.
Integration
- Leads the horizontal integration of DOM and hospital/health system leadership into a unified structure.
- Supports the development of service lines across DOM and BMCHS.
- Monitors market needs for clinical services evaluates adequacy of current offerings and develops new programs in response to demand.
Service Line Development
- Advances the development of service lines and associated centers of care ensuring alignment with strategic plans and market objectives.
- Serves as a central coordinating leader across service line activities ensuring clinical integration and fiscal sustainability.
- Establishes systems to analyze financial flows strengthen reporting and support data-driven business planning.
Clinical Management
- In partnership with clinical and administrative leaders oversees DOMs ambulatory specialty clinics primary care practices inpatient services (including the hospitalist program) and procedural services.
- Supports process improvement initiatives to strengthen safety compliance and efficiency across the continuum of care.
- Leads the clinical operations team setting clear priorities monitoring progress and ensuring accountability.
- Uses data analytics and modeling to improve quality safety efficiency and financial outcomes.
- Collaborates with hospital and DOM leadership to promote a culture of safety patient-centered care and staff well-being.
- Partners on information system upgrades and technology adoption to improve patient and staff experience.
- Oversees billing processes collections and compliance and ensures accurate reporting and forecasting.
- Reviews safety reports audits and compliance metrics; takes corrective action as necessary.
- Co-leads strategies for growth and integration of clinical services across hospital system and network levels.
Research
- In partnership with DOM and CAMed and BMCHS research leadership oversees research administration including grant management lab space research staff and non-accredited trainees.
- Maintains an inventory of departmental research activities and manages the Evans endowment support of strategic research activities.
- Oversees development and monitoring of research budgets and deficit resolution.
- Ensures compliance with research policies fiduciary requirements and regulatory guidelines.
- Works with Section Chiefs PIs BU Center Directors and BMCHS research leadership to identify and support priority research areas recruitment and resource acquisition.
Education Management
- Partners with DOM education leadership Vice Chair of Education CAMed and BMCHS leadership to oversee residency fellowship and CAMed education programs.
- Ensures compliance with ACGME standards and accreditation requirements.
- Oversees financial management of training programs including billing compliance where applicable.
- Manages training affiliations with outside institutions fostering strong external relationships.
- Promotes ongoing professional development and continuing education across all staff levels.
Capital Management
- Advises on space planning and allocation in partnership with BMCHS and CAMed leadership.
- Aligns capital assets and investments with departmental growth strategies and service line needs.
Financial Management
- Oversees financial management of clinical operations research portfolio and the Evans Endowment ensuring compliance with regulatory and donor requirements.
- Leads budget development forecasting and reporting in partnership with the COO CFO and departmental leaders.
- Promotes responsible resource allocation and cost containment through proactive management of staffing supplies contracts and professional services.
- Along with the Chair and DOM BUMG BMCHS leadership and faculty the VP will drive revision and implementation of a new compensation model guided by industry best practices to support faculty and fiscal health.
Human Resources Management
- Collaborates with leadership on recruitment compensation promotions and performance management.
- Provides mentorship supervision and support to staff ensuring they have the resources to succeed.
- Builds engagement through professional development transparent communication and opportunities for growth.
- Fosters a culture of equity inclusion and collaboration supporting long-term career satisfaction.
