General Summary of Position:

The Francis College of Engineering (FCOE) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) is searching for outstanding candidates for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Biomedical Engineering. The position is anticipated to begin in September 2026.

UMass Lowells Department of Biomedical Engineering trains students to translate discoveries into real-world applications in the medical device and biotechnology industries through an ABET-accredited B.S. programMassachusetts first at a public universitywith specialized tracks in medical device development cell and tissue engineering and biomechanics. Students can accelerate their education with a 41 .S. option and pursue advanced studies via the intercampus Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology (BMEBT) M.S./Ph.D. or the Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering all enhanced by hands-on research in cutting-edge labs and core facilities. Our collaborative research is funded by NSF NIH DoD and industry partners fostering a culture of innovation and scholarship. The department maintains strong partnerships with UMass Chan Medical School interdisciplinary robotics and human performance (PEAK) centers located on the UML campus and M2D2 our medical device and biotech incubator.

The successful candidate should aim to establish an externally funded and internationally recognized research program teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels and contribute to the departments mission through service and promotion of inclusive excellence. Our faculty are teacher-scholars who integrate their teaching mentoring and research to create dynamic learning environments for our students.

Within the FCOE faculty are part of an ABET-accredited industry-engaged community that includes biomedical chemical civil environmental electrical plastics mechanical and computer engineering. Collaboration is central to our research environment: the NERVE Center advances robotics and humanrobot interaction; the Fabric Discovery Center connects advanced textiles to health and defense; the RaytheonUMass Lowell Research Institute (RURI) and Printed Electronics Research Collaborative (PERC) drive the development of next-generation electronics; and our campus-wide Core Research Facilities offer open access to more than 100 instruments and expert staff. Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. in Engineering Physics or a closely related discipline.
  • Dedication to teaching undergraduate and graduate students in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Demonstrated excellence in research and publication.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups of students and faculty.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both oral and written.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Record of successful teaching experience and curriculum development at the college level.
  • Interest in developing interdisciplinary collaborations across engineering computing and applied sciences.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations and employing inclusive pedagogical approaches.
  • Postdoctoral research and previous experience working with industry.
  • We are seeking candidates at the Assistant Professor level with expertise in one or more of the following areas that are synergistic with our current faculty expertise: medical devices biomechanics and cell and tissue Engineering.
