Job Summary:

The scientist will join the Department of Orthopedics & Rehabilitation at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. This individual will work directly under the supervision of Dr. Stephanie Kliethermes who is a Research Associate Professor in the department and directs the national Collaborative Research Network (CRN) in Sports Medicine for the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM). The scientist will be responsible for supporting AMSSM CRN scientific initiatives on numerous topics relevant to sports particular the scientist will help lead the development of scientific output often systematic or scoping reviews and methodology papers in support of CRN led Research Summits. The scientist will also lead (or assist in depending on experience) the growth and conduct of the CRN mentorship program. Additionally the scientist will provide guidance to AMSSM affiliated investigators applying for CRN grants or conducting independent research including providing scientific reviews and feedback on CRN grant applications. Finally the scientist will support the design and development of study protocols including serving as a co-investigator or principal investigator for ongoing and future collaborative research studies supported and led by the CRN. The research scientist will work closely with Dr. Kliethermes AMSSM Research Director the AMSSM Research Program Manager and AMSSM Research Coordinator as well as research administrative staff within the department. This position will be based in-person on the UW-Madison campus. A successful candidate will have experience working in a clinical healthcare setting or performing human subjects research in a clinical setting and have a demonstrated interest in sports medicine. Candidates should have expertise in the areas of study design grant writing leading research teams and conducting reviews (e.g. systematic scoping). Experience conducting qualitative and/or mixed methods research is also desired.

  • This position requires work to be completed onsite at a designated campus work location.

  • Applicants for this position will be considered for the following titles Scientist I and Scientist II. The title is determined by the experience and qualifications of the finalist.

  • Successful candidates will have a strong background in methodological approaches and be able to assist investigators in all stages of research within the field of sports medicine. They will necessarily have strong written and oral communication skills and have the ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.

Key Job Responsibilities:

  • Attends and assists with the facilitation of scholarly events and presentations in support of continued professional development and the dissemination of research information
  • Conducts literature reviews prepares reports and materials and disseminates information to appropriate entities
  • Collects and analyzes research data conducts experiments and interviews and documents results according to established policies and procedures under general supervision and limited responsibility
  • Assists with the identification of research problems and the development of research methodologies and procedures
  • Serves as a main point of contact and liaison with internal and external stakeholders providing information and representing the interests of a specialized research area
  • Writes or assists in developing grant applications and proposals to secure research funding

Compensation:

The starting salary for the position is $70000 (Scientist I) or $80000 (Scientist II); but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience with clinical research -including study design data collection and analysis

  • Proficiency with statistical analysis including at least one programming language (e.g. SAS R)

  • Strong oral and written communication skillset

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience conducting systematic scoping reviews

  • Demonstrated interest in sports medicine related topics

  • Experience with qualitative and/or mixed-methods research

  • Experience with writing and submitting scientific proposals

Education:

Terminal Degree PhD with a focus in Epidemiology Biostatistics Quantitative Research Methodology or related disciplines preferred
