The mission of the Louisiana Veterans Homes is to primarily serve the Veterans population of Louisiana through the provision of medical restorative and rehabilitative services in an atmosphere of respect and compassion. The primary objective of the home is to provide quality nursing care to eligible veterans with the ultimate goal of returning the veterans to the highest possible levels of physical and mental capacity.

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Veterans Assistance Counselorto counsel veterans and their dependents in obtaining health employment educational and fiscal benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

This job requires the incumbent to be an honorably discharged veteran of the United States Armed Forces who served on an active full-time basis and meet one of the following qualification requirements:

Three years of experience in veterans service work public benefits claims examining social services or human resources; OR

Six years of full-time experience in any field; OR

A bachelors degree.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

As a Veterans Assistance Counselor you will counsel veterans and their dependents in obtaining health employment educational and fiscal benefits.

In this role you will also:

  • Function in a public relations capacity in a parish for the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Review benefit claims when processed to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Provide assistance to veterans such as admissions to U. S. Department of Veterans Affairs Hospitals correction of military records or securing proper care for physically or mentally disabled veterans.
  • Conduct personal interviews and counsel veterans and their dependents regarding entitlement under state and federal laws.
  • Attend all training and continuing education classes to maintain accreditation.
  • Attend meetings and briefings with various U.S. Veterans Affairs Regional Office and Medical Center personnel to stay abreast of policy changes and offer input on suggestions for improving the system for delivering benefits.
  • Maintain current records on all transactions and file correspondence in veterans files or other proper places.
  • Participate with veterans organizations to disseminate information regarding the Department and its mission.
  • Promote public interest by participating in conferences speaking engagements and meetings.

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probational or Promotional
Work Schedule:Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 4:30 pm.
