Sr DBA Administrator

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Database Administrator (DBA) to join our team supporting a strategic client engagement focused on logical/application database management. This role combines deep technical database expertise with application-focused support working directly with development teams infrastructure teams and business stakeholders to optimize database performance ensure data integrity and support critical business applications. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in both SQL Server and Oracle environments with the ability to work in a collaborative multi-stakeholder environment including customer business teams DXC application teams and Infrastructure DBA vendors.

Key Responsibilities

Logical Database Management & Application Support

Database Design and Optimization

• Provide expert logical database support and design efforts in collaboration with programming teams
• Optimize physical database structures translating logical models into efficient implementations
• Conduct database schema reviews and recommend improvements for performance and scalability
• Manage data model documentation using ER Studio and maintain enterprise data model repository
• Record all data model submissions and changes in the customer enterprise data model repository
• Support database normalization denormalization and partitioning strategies based on application requirements

Day-to-Day Database Operations

• Perform comprehensive database activities including virtual database provisioning and table space management
• Execute performance monitoring and tuning activities for optimal database operation
• Amend system parameters for more efficient database operation including SQL query optimization and DB logical path improvements
• Implement data partitioning strategies to improve performance and manageability
• Support application upgrades and maintain current versioning support through database modifications

Performance Optimization and Tuning

• Monitor databases for performance and implement systematic performance improvements
• Optimize SQL queries stored procedures functions and database code for maximum efficiency
• Implement and maintain indexing strategies to improve query performance and resource utilization
• Conduct performance analysis using established metrics
• Collaborate with developers to provide performance monitoring and tuning support for application code
• Perform load testing using customer-approved testing tools and methodologies
• Submit test results to customer periodically (no less than bi-weekly) upon completion

Application Database Operations

Data Integrity and Cross-Application Integration

• Resolve data and transaction integrity issues including database rollback roll-forward and log file replay techniques
• Monitor and support ETL processes and data integration jobs across application landscape
• Ensure data quality and consistency across interconnected systems
• Coordinate database changes affecting upstream and downstream applications
• Perform data normalizations conversions and migrations as required to support application efficiencies
• Execute approved data clean-up operations for applications
• Perform approved data purging and archiving requests

Database Testing and Quality Assurance

• Perform comprehensive testing of database functionality
• Simulate and test database performance using customer-approved testing tools and methodologies
• Validate database changes and modifications before production implementation
• Support quality assurance processes for application releases and database updates

Change Management and Release Support

• Install logical database components including application updates patches and fixes
• Support job requests code deployment and data refresh for non-production environments
• Coordinate production password maintenance and project deployments
• Participate in change advisory board (CAB) processes and approval workflows
• Ensure databases are available and refreshed within defined service levels
• Manage database refresh activities for non-production environments

Monitoring and Incident Management

Proactive Database Management

• Implement comprehensive database monitoring using New Relic and other approved tools
• Establish and maintain performance baselines and alerting thresholds
• Conduct regular database health checks and proactive maintenance activities
• Monitor database storage growth and implement capacity planning recommendations
• Support 24x7 operations through on-call rotation and incident response

Incident and Problem Resolution

• Complete incident management and problem management processes through working tickets
• Respond to and resolve database-related incidents following ITIL processes
• Perform root cause analysis for recurring database issues and implement permanent solutions
• Resolve errors and failures including manually initiating/holding data warehouse processes
• Conduct urgent database changes and perform individual file processing as required
• Coordinate with Infrastructure DBA teams and physical database management teams for complex issues

Data Services and Support

• Provide data exports to satisfy both scheduled and ad-hoc data inquiries by application owners
• Support authorized customer designees with data access and reporting requirements
• Coordinate with customer Data Management group as necessary required or requested
• Collaborate with third parties including physical database management teams as needed

Compliance and Documentation

Service Delivery Excellence

• Ensure adherence to client SLAs and service level commitments
• Participate in regular service reviews and performance reporting
• Support audit activities and compliance reporting requirements
• Ensure databases are available and refreshed within defined service levels
• Maintain comprehensive documentation of all database changes and procedures

Knowledge Management and Training

• Develop and maintain comprehensive documentation and reference materials
• Document and refine database maintenance methodologies
• Maintain data dictionary systems that are readily accessible to customer personnel
• Complete training activities to stay current with applicable technologies and customer knowledge requirements
• Provide knowledge transfer and training to team members and stakeholders
• Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives and process optimization
• Document all changes to databases ensuring accessibility to customer personnel

Required Qualifications

Technical Expertise

• 8 years of hands-on database administration experience in enterprise environments
• Expert-level knowledge in either SQL Server OR Oracle with strong working knowledge of the other platform
• SQL Server Skills: T-SQL SSMS SQL Server Agent performance tuning index optimization
• Oracle Skills: PL/SQL Oracle Enterprise Manager performance tuning optimizer statistics
• High Availability Awareness: Understanding of RAC DataGuard and Always On technologies from an application perspective - how they impact application connectivity failover behavior and performance considerations (infrastructure implementation managed by Infrastructure DBAs)
• Strong understanding of database design principles normalization and data modeling concepts
• Experience with database performance monitoring testing tools and optimization methodologies
• Knowledge of backup and recovery strategies high availability and disaster recovery concepts
• Understanding of virtual database provisioning and table space management
• Experience with data purging archiving and data lifecycle management

Application Database Focus

• 5 years experience working directly with application development teams and programming teams
• Strong understanding of OLTP and OLAP workloads and optimization strategies
• Experience with ETL processes data integration and cross-application data flows
• Knowledge of stored procedures functions triggers and database programming
• Understanding of application release cycles and database change management
• Experience with data migration conversion normalization and synchronization projects
• Ability to support application upgrades and maintain current versioning support
• Experience with database testing methodologies and quality assurance processes
• Knowledge of data warehouse processes and individual file processing
• Understanding of logical database path optimization and data partitioning strategies

Service Management and Tools

• Experience with ITIL processes including incident problem and change management
• ServiceNow experience for ticket management and workflow processes preferred
• New Relic or similar database monitoring tools experience preferred
• ER Studio or similar data modeling tools experience preferred
• Understanding of service level agreements and performance metrics reporting
• Experience working in multi-vendor and multi-stakeholder environments

Communication and Collaboration

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills - English
• Ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
• Strong collaborative skills working with development teams business users and vendors
• Experience facilitating meetings and coordinating cross-functional activities

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced Technical Skills

• Dual expertise in both SQL Server AND Oracle environments
• Experience with cloud database platforms (Azure SQL AWS RDS Oracle Cloud)
• Knowledge of NoSQL databases and modern data architectures
• Experience working with/building CI/CD pipelines
• Understanding of containerization and modern deployment methodologies
• Experience with data warehousing and analytics platforms

Industry Experience

• Knowledge of data governance frameworks and regulatory compliance (GDPR HIPAA SOX)
• Understanding of database security best practices including encryption and access controls
• Experience with enterprise architecture and large-scale database environments

Certifications

• Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate or equivalent SQL Server certifications
• Oracle Certified Professional (OCP) or equivalent Oracle certifications
• ITIL Foundation or higher-level ITIL certifications
• Project Management or Agile methodology certifications
