PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

As Unit Manager youll lead Long Form Audios Production Management team and work in partnership with the Long Form Audio Senior Editorial team driving projects seamlessly from development through to commission; greenlight and onto delivery. This role blends operational expertise with creative vision from risk and financial management to resources planning - championing efficiency and change. Its a chance to make a real impactbalancing resources with creativity to shape the future of our output and contribute to the BBCs commitment to innovation diversity and world class content.

The department has teams in both Salford and London and so this role will involve regular travel between the two bases.

WHY JOIN THE TEAM

BBC News and Current Affairs has an opportunity for a Unit Manager to cover maternity leave (12 months) with Long Form Audio producing a range of audio; podcasts and visualised long form current affairs and investigative content for News; BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND IMPACT:

  • Act as the central link between Production and Editorial leads ensuring smooth collaboration.
  • Manage day-to-day resources including editorial headcount and deliver accurate budgets and production plans in a dynamic environment.
  • Oversee future planning for commissions across the financial year aligning with strategic goals.
  • Drive innovation and continuous improvement implementing workflows such as monthly business reviews and greenlighting to manage risk.
  • Lead and develop a team of production management staff fostering efficiency and effectiveness across the department.
  • Promote a creative inclusive and collaborative culture to attract retain and grow talent.

YOUR SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL CRITERIA:

We will be seeking evidence of the following essential skills and experience within your application

  • Proven experience in Production Management as a Production Manager or Unit Manager who has managed large scale productions and teams & thrives in a fast paced multi-platform environment.
  • Excellent people management and team leadership skills across diverse teams.
  • A good working knowledge of BBC Terms and Conditions HR processes; scheduling and the rota management of large editorial teams across simultaneous productions and the management of headcount to match budget.
  • A clear understanding of end-to-end multi-platform production processes including but not limited to long form investigative programmes in fast paced production environments.
  • A thorough knowledge of commissioning and green light procedures to manage productions including mitigating and flagging where appropriate production risks.
  • Outstanding business and financial understanding to create forecast and manage significant production resources and budgets as well as managing mitigating and flagging where appropriate production risks.
