Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time overseeing and evolving Ontarios electricity market engaging with government municipalities and Indigenous communities and planning for Ontarios future electricity needs. Our employees play a key role in driving grid innovation protecting the system from threats advancing the provinces energy conservation programs and forecasting and procuring the electricity resources well need in the decades to come.
This role is a part of the Legal Resources and Corporate Governance business unit. This role is a management position.

Reporting to the Director Regulatory Affairs and Market Rules and managing a team of direct and indirect reports the Senior Manager Compliance Assurance provides tactical and strategic oversight and leadership of IESO compliance activities related to Ontarios market rules and North American reliability standards. The role serves as a strategic liaison between senior leadership and operational teams translating strategic priorities into specific work initiatives that align their teams activities to the goals of the business unit.
What youll do
The Senior Manager Compliance Assurance leads the organizations compliance program ensuring a strong forward-looking posture aligned with enterprise priorities. This role drives a culture of accountability continuous improvement and proactive risk mitigation while overseeing participation in reliability standards development with relevant authorities. The Senior Manager manages resources balances strategic and operational work and ensures high-quality outputs from the teams day-to-day activities. Additionally the role provides strategic input on internal compliance direction and aligns departmental strategies with business unit and organizational objectives.
In this role youll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through these key job functions:
Strategic Oversight & Leadership
- Translate strategic priorities into actionable compliance initiatives.
- Lead multiple teams in delivering core and strategic internal compliance and reliability standards development work ensuring alignment with divisional and enterprise goals.
- Ability to assume the signing authority and represent the Director as required.
Internal Compliance Program Management - Develop and lead practices for their teams that may have organizational-wide impact including the internal compliance program.
- Oversee the development implementation and continuous improvement of the IESOs internal compliance program.
- Administer a program that provides a high-degree of assurance of compliance with Ontario Market Rules NERC and NPCC reliability standards and other applicable regulatory frameworks.
- Provide regular reporting to senior leadership and contribute to enterprise-wide compliance metrics.
Reliability Standards Development Management - Coordinate within the IESO and externally with market participants for Ontarios participation in reliability standards development.
- Advocate and influence IESO positions within compliance and reliability standards related committees task forces and working groups.
- Coordinate reliability standards development procedures and activities with NERC NPCC MACD market participants and the OEB as required.
Risk Identification & Mitigation
- Identify emerging compliance risks and develop mitigation and control strategies.
- Ensure timely and effective resolution of compliance issues investigations and audit findings.
- Develop and monitor risk mitigation plans on behalf of their teams regarding compliance activities a few of which may be reported to the Executive Leadership Team and the Board of Directors.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Represent the IESO in internal and external forums related to internal compliance and reliability standards development.
- Collaborate with regulatory bodies industry stakeholders and internal business units to influence best practices and ensure alignment between strategic priorities and operational objectives.
- Has occasional interaction with IESO Executive Leadership Team and at times Board Committees on matters related to compliance assurance.
- Provide Executive Leadership Team and Board materials to Director as applicable.
Change Management & Continuous Improvement - Lead change initiatives to enhance compliance processes systems and culture.
- Promote innovation and efficiency in compliance assurance activities.
People Leadership
- Lead and develop a high-performing compliance assurance team.
- Provide leadership for a team of direct and indirect reports acting as a liaison between the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) or Director and their teams.
- Oversee strategic workforce planning succession planning and capability development.
- Responsible for team capacity and capability planning.
- Provide leadership oversight and direction to staff (e.g. defines team member roles responsibilities and expectations); delivers timely feedback to ensure a cohesive operational unit and the optimum use of team skills; manages staff and monitors work assignments for adherence to timelines
- Lead and influence cross-organizational work where a direct reporting relationship is not in place.
- Establish goals for teams ensuring alignment with corporate and business unit objectives risks and mandate.
- Monitor teams progress against KPIs and strategic objectives.
- Champion change leadership and provide support of continued improvements and achievement of teams objectives.
- May influence objectives and plans at business unit level and cascades them to their teams.
- Provide coaching mentoring and performance management.
- Define team priorities and workplans and is accountable for teams performance review process.
- Participate in calibrating performance of team members in support of fairness and equity across the IESO.
- Accountable for execution of strategic people leadership activities for their teams.
- Ensure teams output effectively meets business needs and goals; ensuring quality quantity and timeliness of work production to achieve Divisions objectives.
Strategic Planning & Budgeting
- Support their people leader for divisional business planning and budget management activities.
- Allocate resources effectively to support department initiatives and ensure alignment with organizational goals.
- Identify teams budget needs to inform business planning and monitor budget forecasts/actuals at the team level.
- Monitor project and program progress to deliver objectives on time and within budget and achieve anticipated business results while maximizing capital investment.
- Meet service delivery objectives and manage project and team activities within budgetary limits.
- Monitor progress to ensure that team objectives are delivered on time and within budget and that anticipated business results are achieved.
- Oversee relevant consultant and vendor contracts as applicable.
- Apply LEAN principles to support financial stewardship.
- Develop and update monthly reports (e.g. Business Performance Reviews and Key Performance Indicators).
In a typical day you will meet with peers across the organization to ensure readiness to meet new and emerging regulatory requirements. You will also meet with senior leadership updating them on sector developments and indicating an overall status of the IESOs compliance program. You may also be engaged with stakeholders and regulators to support overall understanding of sector reliability obligations.
Role Requirements
Our team consists of experts from diverse backgrounds each bringing their unique perspectives and skills.
To succeed in this role youll need:
- University degree in engineering law public policy or a related field; advanced degree or professional certification is an asset.
- Typically requires 10-12 years of progressive experience in compliance regulatory affairs or system and market operations.
- Strong understanding of the IESO structure mandate and Ontarios electricity sector with up-to-date knowledge of industry trends best practices and technological developments in reliability standards market rules and internal compliance.
- Current knowledge of Artificial Intelligence and Large Language Models and applications to regulatory frameworks.
- Proven experience in strategic compliance leadership preferably in the electricity sector or a similarly regulated industry.
- Proven ability to plan organize and manage complex evolving priorities with strong strategic implementation experience.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy combined with advanced analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Demonstrated leadership in guiding cross-functional teams and influencing organizational-wide outcomes.
- Strong communication listening and interpersonal skills to build relationships and engage stakeholders effectively.
- Expertise in change management risk management audit coordination and regulatory reporting.
- Progressive experience in strategic oversight team development and budget monitoring.
