Discipline of Psychiatry & Mental Health at UNSW

The UNSW discipline of Psychiatry & Mental Health leads the delivery of psychiatry education within the medical program as well as a broad program of research focused on understanding and improving mental health in our community.

Staff come from a wide range of professional backgrounds including the medical specialty of psychiatry as well as psychology nursing and other allied health fields public health neuroscience and the social sciences.

Details of the role

This Data Analyst position plays a key role working within Faculty of Medicine & Health Centre for Big Data Research to contribute actively to the provision of high-quality analyst support to the translational research activities of South Eastern Sydney Local Health District (SESLHD) Mental Health Service including data linkage projects that position data as a key asset in driving value-based care decision making and service evaluation and reform.

The Data Analyst will be responsible for providing research design statistical analysis data visualisation and interpretation of results to inform policy and practice. The position will contribute to the conduct of highquality data-driven research to improve service delivery and health outcomes for Mental Health consumers and their families carers and support persons.

This position will be responsible for all stages of the data lifecycle from data preparation and cleaning to advanced statistical modelling and the communication of findings to policy and clinical stakeholders. This position requires a combination of advanced technical skills understanding of Australian data governance principles and a commitment to conducting rigorous ethical and impactful public health research.

The role reports to the Senior Project Officer supporting Centre for Big Data Research and has no direct reports.

Some key skills required:

  • Relevant tertiary qualification (e.g. Data Science Biostatistics Epidemiology Health Informatics) with subsequent relevant experience or equivalent competence gained through any combination of education training and experience.
  • Ability to conduct complex data manipulation wrangling and cohort creation using advanced SQL on large-scale relational databases.
  • Apply appropriate and advanced statistical methods to analyse complex health service utilisation data including count data models (e.g. Negative Binomial Zero-Inflated models) and regression techniques.
  • Develop and validate predictive models to identify factors associated with key mental health outcomes.
  • Experience working with a range of computer systems and applications including R (tidyverse) and/or Python (pandas scikit-learn) for data cleaning analysis statistical modelling and performance optimisation.
  • Database management skills to combine datasets from different sources and implement data quality and consistency checks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with a high level of attention to detail for deliverables produced.
  • Prior experience working with Australian administrative health datasets (e.g. Admitted Patient Data Collection Emergency Department Data Collection) is desirable.
