JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/ Objective
East Side House (ESH) is a community resource in the Bronx and Northern Manhattan. We believe education is the key that enables all people to create economic and civic opportunities for themselves their families and their community. ESHs Jobs Plus Program aligns with our mission by providing high quality programs and services within community centers and school partnerships.
Reporting to the Assistant Director the Community Coach is responsible to recruit for the program through word-of-mouth advertising. The Community Coach will engage with the community and promote ESHs Jobs-Plus program through tabling one-one-one conversations and sharing information at community and Tenant Association events.. As a member of the outreach team the Community Coach is expected to provide valuable insight as to the needs and desires of the community residents. Community Coaches interact with all other department service areas and and focuses on membership and enrollment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director the Community Coach will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
- Execute grassroots outreach strategy that will include regular check-ins at informal gathering places such as local pharmacies bodegas gas stations car garages dry cleaners car washes gas stations barber shops beauty salons nail salons libraries Laundromats houses of worship fast food restaurants and the community affairs offices at the 40th Police Precinct and PSA 7.
- Work in partnership with existing neighborhood associations such as the Tenants Association
- Do outreach in informal gathering places within NYCHA housing developments such as sitting areas and playgrounds
- Provide ongoing input information and materials (as requested) that support internal and external communication efforts about programming and opportunities.
- Coordinate or assist in planning for events such as community meetings block parties health fairs and local business fairs
- Develop systems to distribute information to community residents; Identify and implement the creative use of evolving social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter to increase citizen engagement and dialogue
- Coordinate outreach and referrals from the Resident Association Presidents at each of the housing developments served as well as with East Side House programs at four NYCHA-based early childhood centers three NYCHA-based elementary afterschool programs three NYCHA-based senior citizen centers and seven school-based programs which serve many residents of public housing from the Mott Haven neighborhood.
- Serve as a receptionist for main desk: Welcome/screen all persons who enter office; Answer Phones closely monitor shared Community Coach email inbox and respond to all inquiries in a timely manner; Take messages Fax Copy retrieve and sort incoming mail
- Assist Departments as assigned with small project and administrative tasks
- Process SNAP / Medicaid Application and NYCHA recertification as needed.
- Manage all sign-in sheets for events and office operations
- Ensure the adequate completion of membership application folders; Facilitate new member orientation presentations

Qualifications
Qualifications
To perform this position successfully the Community Coach must be able to fulfill all the elements of the job description to the highest standard and be able to work well with colleagues in a high energy and collaborative work environment. Additional qualifications include:
Education / Experience
- High school diploma or GED; AA degree in human service-related field a plus.
- Excellent verbal communication skills. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish) preferred but not required. Must be a people person.
- Experience with grassroots information dissemination strategies. Previous outreach experience in urban communities helpful.
- Knowledge of and familiarity with institutions and people from the Mott Haven neighborhood highly preferred.
- Must be self-directed and organized.
- Basic computer skills necessary.
- Must live in the MillBrook Mitchel or Mott Haven Houses or surrounding neighborhood.
- Must clear fingerprinting and background check
Clearance
Employees must be clear to work at ESH. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of background checks and/or screenings.

Physical Demands
This role may involve occasional lifting or moving of items up to 25 pounds and routine use of standard office equipment. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Expected Work Schedule
The work schedule expected for this position is between 9:00am 7:00pm Monday Fridays; One Saturday a month rotation as aligned to the needs of the program/ service. The schedule may be adjusted based on ESHs operational needs with notice provided whenever possible.
