We are seeking a dynamic highly motivatedAsylum Seekers Assistance Program Housing Worker who demonstrates our values of compassion accountability responsiveness and empowerment; to our clients families and each other.
The Newcomer Asylum Seekers Assistance Program Housing Worker will play a pivotal role in helping asylum seekers navigate the process of securing appropriate housing and providing assistance that matches their needs. Additionally they will provide ongoing support resources and personalized guidance to ensure that asylum seekers receive comprehensive support throughout their participation in the Asylum Seekers Assistance Program (ASAP).
This is a unionized full-time permanent position.
The rate of pay is $23.93 per hour.
Hours are 40 per week.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee newcomer housing in the provision of housing support services to asylum seekers in Newcomer Services.
- Assist each participant with securing appropriate housing based on individual needs and budget.
- Provide housing support to asylum seekers and cover shifts at the Reception Center as needed.
- Provide advice education advocacy and practical help to clients.
- Assists participants with their move into independent accommodations including Unit Management (Washer Dryer Recycling and etc.) neighborhood orientation Public transportation and Grocery shopping.
- Maintain records of participation and relevant program statistics for housing and Ensure that records are kept confidential and secure at all times.
- Work with current landlords and expand the list and Report and communicate to management team on the progress strategies challenges and status of the program.
- Be aware & knowledgeable about the Landlord and Tenant Act.
- Be able to work at the Reception Center community accompaniments and home visits.
- Must be onsite where clients are temporarily accommodated either in Hamilton or surrounding cities.
- Other Duties as assigned.
What you will bring:
- A College Diploma or higher in social work social services or a related field or a combination of relevant experience and education working with newcomers.
- Leadership abilities to provide guidance knowledge and support to the ASAP team and the Newcomer department relating to housing.
- Proven ability to demonstrate Wesleys mission vision and values.
- Asset if the applicant has current relationships with existing landlords in the Hamilton area; strong ability to create and maintain positive relationships with landlords.
- Experience working in the housing field including finding units arranging housing appts explaining and completing housing applications interpreting lease agreements for housing arranging move-outs and move-ins assisting clients with obtaining furniture applications for insurance and utilities arranging for deposits and banking etc.
- Flexibility with work hours including evenings and weekends if needed.
- Fluency in one or more of the following languagesFrench Turkish Swahili Czech or Spanishin addition to English both written and spoken is required.
- Possess a valid G drivers license and have access to a vehicle.
