Job Summary

Duties and Responsibilities

The TEST DATE is scheduled for Monday December 1 2025 at 8:30 am at the Downtown Event Centre 700 Crockett Street Beaumont TX 77701 (MUST PRESENT A VALID DRIVERS LICENSE AT THE TEST LOCATION). The test will be cognitive skills only (No prior knowledge of fire or EMS assumed).

Essential Job Functions:Participates in independent study formal classroom instruction to become proficient in the basic skills necessary to become officially sworn in as a Beaumont Fire-Rescue Firefighter. Upon obtaining all required certifications employee will be responsible for the understanding of fire fighting fire prevention and rescue methods and techniques; work is reviewed by superiors through observation and results obtained. Responds to alarm of fire or other emergencies with a pumper or ladder company; lays and connects hoses; holds nozzles and directs fog or water streams; raises and climbs ladders; uses chemical extinguishers bars hooks lines and other equipment; occasionally drives fire equipment; ventilates burning buildings by opening windows and skylights or by chopping holes in roofs and floors; removes persons from danger; performs salvage operations such as throwing salvage covers sweeping water and removing debris; responds to a variety of calls of an emergency nature requiring the performance of light and heavy duty rescue activities such as administering oxygen CPR and operating various equipment used in rescue operations; participates in fire drills and attends regular classes in fire fighting rescue pre-hospital care fire prevention equipment maintenance and related subjects; studies assigned materials; inspects assigned district to assure thorough knowledge of all streets alleys and buildings; participates in fire prevention inspection of residential and business buildings and contents; inspects and makes minor repairs to fire hydrants; performs general maintenance and cleaning work in the upkeep of departmental apparatus equipment furnishings and structures; cleans and washes walls and floors; washes and dries hose; washes cleans and polishes apparatus. Adheres to all written polices procedures and protocols.

Working Conditions

This position requires 100% on-site work.Must pass a strength and agility test and physical examination (see below for requirements). Must possess a valid Class C Texas drivers license. May be subject to bodily injury in the line of duty. Works a 40-hour work week. May be subject to work overtime as necessary.

  • Aerial Ladder Climb 100 at a 75-degree angle

Minimum Essential Qualifications

Knowledge: Current industry standards and best practices of progressive emergency services organizations; the geographical layout of the City of Beaumont safe operating practices and procedures for emergency apparatus and equipment used within the department; generally accepted and department-specific practices procedures techniques methods instruments and equipment; principles policies and procedures relative to emergency medical and technical rescue operations; firefighting salvage and overhaul operations; hazardous materials incident operations; the laws regulations policies and procedures relevant to emergency services response activities; organizational philosophy and ethical policies that direct all personnel in the discharge of their duties; structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words rules of composition and grammar.


Skills/Abilities: The operation of emergency medical equipment; fire equipment and apparatus; fire emergency medical and hazardous materials practices; rescue and extrication procedures; filling out forms for documentation; performing physically strenuous activities in a high stress environment; communications and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers supervisors the general public etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction. Must be able to obtain and maintain authorization to practice from the EMS Medical Director.


Physical Requirements: Frequently work at heights greater than ten feet; occasionally work at heights of up to 100 ft.; frequently move objects 40-60 lbs. short distances (30 feet or more); frequently hold 80-100 lbs.; infrequently carry 50-150 lbs.; occasionally lift or drag in excess of 150 lbs. of force; perform duties requiring frequent pulling of 40 lbs or more such as removing hose form apparatus pulling ceilings starting power equipment and opening doors on apparatus as required; bend climb balance stoop kneel crouch crawl reach stand walk push pull lift grasp twist and perform repetitive motions repeatedly or continually over time to perform emergency medical services fire ground or other response-related duties; lift arms above shoulder level to cut vent holes with an axe or force entry into vehicles using specialized tools; travel across wet slippery rough uneven or rocky surfaces; use self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing to prevent exposure to hazardous materials and infectious diseases; tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing job duties; work for long periods of time requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration; work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements; within accepted safety practices rely on sense of sight hearing touch and smell to help determine the nature of an emergency and make operational decisions; make life and death decisions during emergency situations.


Education/Experience: Cadet applicants must have a General Educational Development (GED) or High School Diploma.

Applicants with Military service must have an Honorable discharge. An applicant will be disqualified if he/she has been discharged from any military service under less than honorable conditions. This may include: under other than honorable conditions bad conduct dishonorable general uncharacterized and any other characterization of service indicating bad character or conduct even when it coincides with an honorable discharge.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) Emergency Medical Technician Basic or above Certification
  • Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) Basic Structure Fire Suppression Certification
Completion of accredited college hours in any area according to the following increments:
  • 30 semester hours 60 semester hours Associates Degree Bachelors Degree Masters Degree; military Service with Honorable Discharge.

This position requires 100% on-site work. Applicant selected for hire shall be subject to a drug/alcohol screen test a polygraph and physical/psychological examination. Must possess a valid Class C drivers license with a good driving record. Other state valid Drivers license equivalent to Texas Class C with a good driving record will be considered. Texas state law requires within 30 days of residency you must possess a valid Texas drivers license. Applicant selected for hire will be subject to a background investigation and drug/alcohol screen test.

SALARY: Fire Cadets will be sworn employees and earn $4000 per month while enrolled in the Fire Cadet Program. Also Fire Cadets will be required to enter into a Fire Cadet Training Agreement.

Upon successful completion of the academy and State Licensing Exam salary is increased to the current grade I salary per year.

Written Exam Description:

The exam is multiple choice and covers reading comprehension grammar syntax punctuation spelling vocabulary arithmetic and differential decision making. Time Limit: Three (3) hours. You must obtain a score of at least 70 on the multiple-choice portion of the exam in order to move forward to the physical portion of the testing.
