The Assistant Fire Marshal recruitment is an Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) internal promotional recruitment. Only applications from current qualified OCFA employeeswill be considered.
The OCFA is currently recruiting to establish an eligibility list for future Assistant Fire Marshal vacancies.
CLASS SUMMARY:
Incumbents are responsible for supervising and coordinating the day-to-day operations of an assigned section. Incumbents may be assigned to the Planning and Development Community Wildfire Mitigation or Prevention Field Services sections.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The Assistant Fire Marshal is the sixth level in an eight level fire prevention series. The Assistant Fire Marshal is distinguished from the Senior Fire Prevention Specialist by its supervisory responsibilities. The Assistant Fire Marshal is distinguished from the Deputy Fire Marshal which has managerial responsibility for day-to-day operations for an assigned section in the Community Risk Reduction Department.

EDUCATION(position requirements at entry):
Associate degree with major course work in fire science business political science or a closely related field.
EXPERIENCE(position requirements at entry):
Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience related to hazardous materials plan review and/or inspection experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS(position requirements at entry):
Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License.This classification is subject to enrollment in the California DMV Pull Notice Program which periodically provides Risk Management with the incumbents Driver License record and status.

Written Exam - 25%
The minimum passing score for this selection component is 80%. All candidates who achieve 80% or greater on the written exam will be invited to the oral interview. Candidates final overall selection component score will include 10% of their written exam score.
Oral Interview - 75%
The minimum passing score for this selection component is 80%. Candidates final overall selection component score will include 75% of their oral interview score.
Eligibility List:
Candidates who achieve 80% or greater on the written exam and the oral interview will be placed onto the Assistant Fire Marshal eligibility list. The duration of the Eligible List is one year and may be extended or abolished by the Assistant Chief of Human Resources at any time.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Positions in this class typically require balancing crouching crawling climbing reaching standing walking driving lifting grasping feeling talking hearing seeing and repetitive motions.
Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time the job is rated for Light Work.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts electrical currents vibrations fumes dusts gases poor ventilation chemicals extreme temperatures inadequate lighting workspace restrictions intense noises and travel.

SELECTION PROCEDURES:
INITIAL SELECTION REVIEW:
The Human Resources Department reviews all initial application materials to identify qualified applicants. Applicants meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to the first phase of the recruitment process. The OCFA reserves the right to refer only the better qualified applicants if the number of applicants is high. If the number of applicants is high the review process may include a secondary screening(by a panel of job knowledge experts) of the applications and/or supplemental questionnaires in which the better qualified applicants are referred to the next phase of the recruitment process. TESTING:
