COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR ROHNERT PARK HEADQUARTERS

40 HOURS PER WEEK FULL TIME


THE POSITION:

Under direction of the Library Director the Communications Director is responsible for strategic oversight of the Librarys marketing and communications including planning writing producing and managing content for advertising marketing branding promotions public relations public affairs social media and internal and external communications for the library. This position oversees and supervises graphics and marketing staff.

The Communications Director works closely with the Library Director and Library Commission to advance the interests of the library with other public agencies including the county the incorporated cities school districts and nonprofit or private entities including advising the Library Director on public affairs matters and working under the Library Director to discuss agreements that support the librarys needs and initiatives.

TYPICAL TASKS include but are not limited to:

  • Creates updates and administers a comprehensive marketing plan which includes regularly gathering community input and assessing needs in Sonoma County Librarys service area.
  • Schedules trains supervises and evaluates professional and support staff.
  • Identifies services resources and programs for marketing and promotional opportunities; develops strategies and carries out a wide range of marketing activities.
  • Designs and conducts surveys and marketing and public opinion research as part of the evaluation of library services resources and programming and measures of library goals and initiatives.
  • Plans writes edits proofreads and produces print and electronic publications and presentations such as newsletters and Library News; manages internal and external communications.
  • Manages the library brand ensuring consistency in visual brand elements as well as written tone naming and other branding guidelines.
  • Oversees library social media policy and strategy coordinating with authorized contributors across the organization to ensure its effectiveness.


QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way of gaining the knowledge and skills is:

Education: Bachelors Degree preferred with significant coursework in marketing business administration communications journalism public information and relations.

Experience:Minimum four (4) years demonstrated experience in internal/external marketing communications and public affairs experience and at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.

Licenses: Possession of a valid California Drivers License.

COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR

DEFINITION
This position is responsible for strategic oversight of the Librarys marketing and communications including planning writing producing and managing content for advertising marketing branding promotions public affairs public relations social media and internal and external communications for the library. This position oversees and supervises graphics and marketing staff.

The incumbent acts as a resource to members of the Library Commission when needed to maximize the commissioners effectiveness in communicating core library messages and information.

The incumbent works closely with the Library Director and Library Commission to advance the interests of the library with other public agencies including the county the incorporated cities school districts and nonprofit or private entities including advising the Library Director on public affairs matters and working under the Director to discuss agreements that support the librarys needs and initiatives.

Class Characteristics
This management classification is responsible for the marketing branding and internal and external communications for the Library system and oversees paraprofessional and technical staff. Assignments are received in the form of objectives and the incumbent determines how to use resources to meet schedules and goals. This position reports directly to the Library Director and serves as the librarys spokesperson for day-to-day media inquiries; managing crisis and disaster communications; providing training coaching and support to library staff who speak to the media; and networking effectively with other public agency PIOs throughout the county. Duties in this area include assisting the Library Director and other staff with sensitive or controversial communications. This class is differentiated from the Library Director in that the latter has oversight of all Sonoma County Library divisions sections programs activities and services; it is differentiated from the Fund Development Director in that its main focus is to develop and manage messaging for the library to achieve its communications and marketing strategy while the latter is to work with the community on increasing capital and in-kind donations to the Library.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Receives general direction from the Library Director. Exercises direct and/or general supervision over and provides training to assigned professional paraprofessional technical and support staff.

  • Plans and organizes library-wide public relations campaigns special events and programs. Supports fund development activities as assigned.

Physical Demands
Must possess mobility to work in a standard office and library setting and use standard office equipment including a computer; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; hearing and speech to communicate in person before groups and over the telephone. This classification primarily works indoors and requires movement between work areas. Finger dexterity is needed to access enter and retrieve materials and data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate standard office equipment. Positions in this classification occasionally bend stoop kneel reach push and pull drawers open and closed to retrieve and file information. Positions in this classification occasionally lift and carry reports records and materials that typically weigh less than twenty-five (25) pounds.
Position will require travel throughout Sonoma County to the library branches to plan review and implement activities and establish friendly and cooperative working relationships with library branch staff.

Environmental Elements
Employees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels controlled temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Employees may interact with staff and/or public and private representatives in interpreting and enforcing departmental policies and procedures.

WORKING CONDITIONS
