Louisiana Office of Juvenile Justice (OJJ) is committed to protecting the public by providing safe and effective individualized services to youth who will become productive law-abiding citizens. We are seeking a compassionate and skilled professional to serve as a Social Service Counselor providing direct counseling and case management services to youth in secure care. This role supports the emotional behavioral and social development of justice-involved youth through individualized interventions group facilitation and collaborative treatment planning. The ideal candidate demonstrates empathy clinical insight and a commitment to trauma-informed care and rehabilitation.

Minimum Qualifications

Three years of social services experience; OR

Six years of full-time experience in any field; OR

A bachelors degree.

EXPERIENCE SUBSTITUTION:
Every 30 semester hours earned from an accredited college or university will be credited as one year of experience towards the six years of full-time work experience in any field. The maximum substitution allowed is 120 semester hours which substitutes for a maximum of four years of experience in any field.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Positions that provide addictive disorder counseling or prevention services will require certification or eligibility for certification issued by the Addictive Disorder Regulatory Authority (ADRA) or its successor.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Counsel youth individually and in groups using behavior modification reality therapy and supportive treatment approaches.

  • Collaborate with security staff teachers and other professionals to develop comprehensive characterizations of each youth.

  • Represent youth at classification and conduct committee meetings; monitor PbS folders and participate in in-service training.

  • Provide intensive counseling for dormitory populations with severe behavioral and emotional disturbances; initiate referrals to psychiatric and psychological consultants.

  • Facilitate or co-facilitate therapeutic and educational groups including substance abuse crisis counseling pro-social skills victim awareness and family sessions.

  • Prepare and distribute psychiatric referrals progress reports closing summaries and other documentation to courts probation/parole staff and relevant agencies.

  • Make recommendations for early release less restrictive placements or transfers to more secure environments based on youth behavior and progress.

  • Maintain accurate case records documenting counseling sessions family visits custody levels and all educational medical and behavioral reports.

  • Assist dormitory operations by supporting youth needs monitoring staff and representing supervisors in meetings when required.

Work Location:This vacancy is located at Acadiana Center for Youth in St. Martinville Louisiana.

Appointment Type: This position will be filled as a full time probational appointment

Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Social Service Counselor 1 2 or 3.

The incumbent of this position must not have been convicted or pled nolo contendere to a crime listed in R.S. 15:587.1 (c).

No Civil Service test score is required in order to be considered for this vacancy.
