Job Summary

Instrumental Music Teacher (Guitar)

Part-time Junior and Senior School Leidschenveen

The British School in The Netherlands is seeking to employ a guitar teacher to join its team of Instrumental Music Teachers to deliver high quality one-to-one instrumental tuition as well as contributing to the development of the BSN Music Programme.

The BSN currently employs over 25 instrumental teachers who work across all 4 campuses.

The ideal candidates will be established professional musicians or recent graduate (at Masters level) from a recognized conservatoire who have a healthy teaching practice balanced with their performing schedule.

Candidates should be proficient in teaching both the electric guitar and acoustic guitar across a wide range of styles from classical to pop/rock. The ability to teach bass guitar is desirable and the ideal candidate will have a good working knowledge of guitar maintenance (restringing guitars/fixing inputs) to assist the music staff when the need arises.

You will provide one-to-one music lessons to students at our Leidschenveen campus support our school ensembles as requested by music teachers and you will report to the BSN Peripatetic Music Teacher Lead. The start date will be mid-January.

Main Responsibilities:

  • To enrich the music education of each student and to provide skills that will serve the student for future music making be it for leisure or professional purposes;

  • Planning and preparing instrumental lessons;

  • Teaching students according to their needs including setting practice tasks and preparing them where appropriate for the requirements of external music examinations (ensuring that all aspects of the examination requirements are well prepared and organised);

  • Within a holistic music education approach teach and encourage good technique posture and stylistic awareness on given instrument(s);

  • Advise and encourage pupils to take advantage of appropriate musical activities such as choirs ensembles competitions and other musical opportunities;

  • Prepare pupils for performances at recitals concerts and competitions as required;

  • Assessing recording and reporting on students development and progress;

  • Communicating and consulting with various stakeholders: parents students other BSN staff exam boards etc;

  • Maintaining good order and discipline among students and safeguarding their health and safety.

Personal attributes:

  • A degree in music (BA BMus MusB) from a recognised university or conservatoire;

  • A clear and confident communicator in the English language and the ability to relate to students from a variety of cultural backgrounds;

  • A proven ability to work organise and manage effectively in a calm and patient manner;

  • A strong team player with good interpersonal and communication skills;

  • A proven ability to motivate and enthuse learners and employ a range of teaching strategies to affect consistently good progress;

  • Experience teaching students at different levels;

  • A good knowledge of current pedagogy trends and issues in instrumental teaching and learning;

  • A flexible approach to working hours is essential.

The successful candidate will receive a zero-hour flex contract and a competitive hourly pay rate. The working hours are on average 11-14 per week.
