Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit including GO Expansion Light Rail Transit routes and major expansions to Torontos subway system to get people where they need to go better faster and easier. Under direction of the Manager Technical Training and Development BFM the Technical Support Specialist is responsible for performing and providing technical support to those involved in the inspection diagnosis maintenance repair overhaul modification and operation of all bus vehicle operating systems. This position will be responsible for ensuring that repairs meet established regulatory and corporate standards along with ensuring adherence to technical procedures and OEM Guidelines to ensure safety of the fleet and our passengers.

What will I be doing

  • Diagnosing correcting and eliminating non-routine complex failures on a variety of electrical electronic multiplex mechanical hydraulic pneumatic and structural systems and components on Bus assets.
  • Monitoring equipment and system reliability detecting and quantifying failure trends and understanding root causes and patterns in component life expectancy and assessing the impact on parts usage availability and technician workload investigating and initiating corrective actions and improvements that increase performance or reduce costs.
  • Advising management on the significance and severity of vehicle defects and the resultant vehicle suitability for service.
  • Valuating testing and monitoring of diagnostic hardware and software suitability relevance and performance and taking or arranging for appropriate corrective measures. Training garage employees on the use of diagnostic functions embedded within installed firmware in electronically controlled systems.
  • Drafts and prepares standard operating procedures for the inspection and repair of the bus fleet provide training on them as required
  • Monitoring and evaluating repair techniques being used to ensure safety correct judgement and effective processes are being applied in accordance with procedures and best practices.
  • Developing modification packages and programs as assigned and overseeing the implementation including designing testing the proposed changes and documenting the detailed work instructions necessary for implementation
  • Researching and purchasing special tools and shop equipment required in the inspection repair and maintenance of buses and training garage employees in their safe and proper use
  • Investigating significant vehicle incidents and determining and recommending appropriate actions Preparing technical specifications for materials/parts and liaising with Stores & Procurement Department for purchases.
  • Determining the need for new special tooling training modules and training/familiarization programs
  • Tracking investigating and diagnosing failures on new vehicles to help support warranty claim submissions and latent defect claims including convincing the OEM of the validity of those claims through proper research.
  • Reviewing opportunities for and eligibility for warranty and latent claims and advising garage staff accordingly in order that the appropriate parts and work order information is retained.
  • Following-up on safety critical incidents that have occurred investigating and determining root causes and assessing vehicle condition and -suitability for service as existed prior to incidents and reporting the results to management police and provincial transportation and/or labour authorities.
  • Researching and identifying suitable specialized programs/training for staff and employees on all departmental SOPs and other assigned topics.
  • Training Coach Technicians and other garage personnel regarding finding off/on-line departmental and external OEM and supplier specifications and information used in the inspection and repair of buses.
  • Providing direction and technical supervision to employees with respect to the diagnosis and repair of all bus systems in a safe efficient and effective manner.

What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need

  • Completion of a diploma in automotive technology engineering technology (mechanical electrical or electronic) relevant engineering education or a combination of education training and experience deemed equivalent
  • Minimum six (6) years experience in design or remanufacture of heavy duty automotive systems experience in an environment where heavy duty automotive systems are diagnosed and repaired to critical standards or related experience in a Bus environment
  • Possession of a valid Truck & Coach Technician Certificate (310T) with the ability to upgrade and maintain to a CZ drivers licence is required.
  • A valid non-probationary class G drivers licence and ability to meet and maintain the corporate standard for a good driving record is required.
  • Sound knowledge of automotive engineering design principles and maintenance practices utilized in modern vehicles and transit fleets
  • Detailed knowledge in control systems power systems electrical electronic mechanical hydraulic and pneumatic systems used in engines transmissions steering suspension and brake systems all automotive fluids fuel and cooling systems air conditioning systems door systems and hybrid electric propulsion systems as well as installed accessory systems such as destination signage surveillance cameras stop announcement systems passenger counting systems communication systems GPS system and wireless data transfer systems
  • Proficiency in MS Office (e.g. Outlook Word Excel PowerPoint Access etc.)
  • Interpersonal and oral/written/presentation communication skills to develop standard procedures and documents and reports alternative technological approaches options and solutions
  • Must be knowledgeable of the concepts and practices of vehicle testing programs and procedures. Must have comprehensive knowledge of the latest diagnostic technologies and be able to diagnose and correct failures in any systems and components utilized on automotive powered buses and related shop equipment
  • Sound judgement and well developed analytical problem solving personal computing and verbal and written communications skills.
  • Note: Travel to various work locations away from the home base work location or to attend meetings with suppliers will be required.
