Job Description:

Primary Purpose

The Fire Systems Serviceperson is assigned to participate in all facets of fire and life safety systems maintenance including corrective demand preventive maintenance reconstruction and restoration work. Will perform other duties as assigned to the limits of skills and code requirements.

This position brings specific maintenance knowledge provides job instruction and work direction to others as required and contributes towards providing a safe accessible invitingly clean comfortable and well-maintained campus environment. Assists with addressing stewardship responsibilities and promoting long-term sustainability of facilities and infrastructure maximizing opportunities for efficient delivery of services.

Key Accountabilities

Maintenance and Repair

Performs with minimum supervision inspections maintenance and repairs as well as other related duties as directed.

Performs diagnostics and analysis to help investigate and determine problems and the best course of service reparation or replacement.

Performs other work as required such as emergency lighting extinguisher or suppression system maintenance.

Prepares and submits timely accurate and neat reports showing all pertinent information that completely documents the work performed.

Assists with maintaining and updating all related drawings schematics and service bulletins issued.

Documents all maintenance and inspection activities as directed by the Supervisor.

Operations

Monitors equipment for proper operation making adjustments as required maximizing equipment life and efficiency.

Places monitoring systems into and out of service to assist with established hot work and protection impairment procedures.

Provides feedback on equipment condition and potential replacement timelines and options.

Provides assistance to other trades including internal and external contractor resources. Provides job instruction as well as work direction to other trades/ classifications as required. May coordinate work among other trades/ classifications.

Installations

Assists with design aspects of jobs assigned if or when required to assure safety functionality cost and timeline targets will be met.

Assists with and coordinates the work of external suppliers as requested.

Customer Service

In conjunction with the Supervisor coordinates preventive and demand maintenance and discretionary work assignments with clients when requested.

Assists with the sourcing and requisitioning of materials supplies tools and support equipment / services.

Health Safety and the Environment

Ensures that all University policies standards and procedures are followed when executing assigned tasks.

Maintains current health safety and regulatory certifications in the areas required to perform the functions of the position.

Other

Performs other related duties and responsibilities as assigned and supports departmental activities including performing work of other classifications within scope of trade practice level of incumbents capability/ competency/ skills and/or regulatory requirements. May perform work of a lower classification/ pay band.

Required Qualifications

Education

Minimum of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent

A valid CFAA certificate

Experience

Requires a minimum of two (2) years recent work experience within a major institutional sector(s) such as education post-secondary education medical/ hospital.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

In-depth knowledge of and the ability to install test troubleshoot and service commercial industrial and institutional fire systems

Knowledge of the uses and application of materials and tools for the work to be performed.

Understanding of applicable job safety procedures codes standards and regulations.

Ability to work from ladders scaffolding and personnel lifts.

The ability to prepare reports maintain accurate service records read and interpret blueprints control diagrams and drawings and do material take-offs is required.

Knowledge of basic electricity including applicable safety standards hazard identification and avoidance.

Strong communication organizational and interpersonal skills.

Good problem solving skills.

Basic computer literacy is required.

Must possess and maintain a valid class G Ontario drivers license.
