Senior Software Engineer (Full-stack)

Biohub is leading the new era of AI-powered biology to cure or prevent disease through its 501c3 medical research organization with the support of the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.

The Team

Biohub supports the science and technology that will make it possible to help scientists cure prevent or manage all diseases by the end of this century. While this may seem like an audacious goal in the last 100 years biomedical science has made tremendous strides in understanding biological systems advancing human health and treating disease.

Achieving our mission will only be possible if scientists are able to better understand human biology. To that end we have identified four grand challenges that will unlock the mysteries of the cell and how cells interact within systems paving the way for new discoveries that will change medicine in the decades that follow:

• Building an AI-based virtual cell model to predict and understand cellular behavior
• Developing novel imaging technologies to map measure and model complex biological systems
• Creating new tools for sensing and directly measuring inflammation within tissues in real to better understand inflammation a key driver of many diseases
• Harnessing the immune system for early detection prevention and treatment of disease

The Opportunity

Join a dynamic team focused on building user-facing applications that empower computational biologists and researchers through scalable flexible and intelligent workflows. This team plays a key role in accelerating scientific discovery by developing generalized tools that integrate machine learning services human-in-the-loop capabilities and customizable data processing.

Our mission is to unify the diverse functionalities and resources available across the broader organization from data services to inference pipelines into a cohesive platform that supports both internal collaborators and the broader scientific community. Whether users are bringing their own datasets leveraging CZI tools or customizing their processing pipelines this role offers the chance to shape how cutting-edge science is conducted.

What Youll Do

• Design develop and maintain scalable full-stack web applications that power research workflows across scientific domains.
• Collaborate closely with scientists product managers and other engineers to build intuitive flexible user interfaces and backend services.
• Integrate diverse services and tools including ML inference pipelines human-in-the-loop interfaces and data management systems into a cohesive platform.
• Ensure high standards of code quality performance and maintainability through code reviews testing and automation.
• Drive architectural decisions and contribute to long-term technical planning to support extensibility and scale.
• Build systems that enable researchers to bring their own data customize processing and adapt workflows to their unique needs.
• Partner with infrastructure and platform teams to ensure seamless deployment observability and operational stability of services.

What Youll Bring

• 7 years of professional experience developing full-stack web applications with modern front-end frameworks (e.g. React) and backend technologies (e.g. Python).
• Proven ability to design and implement scalable APIs and data-driven applications.
• Expert knowledge of computer science with strong competencies in data structures algorithms and software design.
• Familiarity with infrastructure concepts such as containerization (Docker) orchestration (Kubernetes) and CI/CD practices.
• Experience integrating or building around AI/ML services especially in application layers involving inference or interactive AI tools.
• Nice-to-have: a background or familiarity with biology computational biology or scientific workflows or a strong interest in learning quickly about the field.
• A product mindset with attention to user experience performance and extensibility.
• Strong collaboration skills with a history of working cross-functionally with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Curiosity flexibility and a desire to work in a mission-driven rapidly evolving environment.

Compensation

The Redwood City CA base pay range for a new hire in this role is 190000 - $261800. New hires are typically hired into the lower portion of the range enabling employee growth in the range over time. Actual placement in range is based on job-related skills and experience as evaluated throughout the interview process.

As we grow were excited to strengthen in-person connections and cultivate a collaborative team-oriented environment. This role is a hybrid position requiring you to be onsite for at least 60% of the working month approximately 3 days a week with specific in-office days determined by the teams manager. The exact schedule will be at the hiring managers discretion and communicated during the interview process.
