Under general supervision the purpose of this position is to provide administrative and technical support for the Crime Scene Unit and the Unit Manager. The Crime Lab Technician is responsible for preparing reports such as monthly statistics meeting minutes assisting in the preparation and maintaining of the annual budget preparing the schedule for the 12-member Unit data entry and responding to media requests. The Crime Lab Technician is responsible for processing and photographing evidence submitted by the Patrol Unit for latent fingerprints and DNA. The position also requires latent fingerprint examinations and verifications.

Bachelors Degree in related job field. Experience in a police/investigations administrative support capacity; or an equivalent combination of education training and experience.
Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office or meeting and training rooms e.g. use of safe workplace practices with office equipment avoidance of trips and falls and observance of fire and building safety regulations and traffic signals when driving. The position requires the safe handling of firearms and narcotics.
Knowledge of pre-established departmental State and Federal policies procedures and regulatory requirements applicable to the work; knowledge of current laws governing evidence/property handling of items involved in criminal investigations.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office

Ability to perform highly responsible work while maintaining integrity and security of police evidence.
Ability to read update and maintain various records and files.
Ability to access operate and maintain various software applications.
Ability to clearly communicate information both verbally and in writing.
Ability to operate specialized crime scene investigation technical equipment as well as basic office equipment e.g. computer terminals printers copy machines telephone systems facsimile machines.
Ability to operate basic photography equipment.

This is a designated Recovery classification in the Citys Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Completion of appropriate level of National Incident Management System (NIMS) training is mandatory within one year of employment.
